    Free defrag

There is a new version of the free open source Ultra Defragmenter available at SOURCEFORGE.

I have been cautioned against free defraggers in the Lounge, but this was released today if anyone wants to take it for a spin.

It rather worries me to see on their webpage: "If you see 'Blue Screen Of Death' as result of UltraDefrag working then include important parts of messages on them".

If a defragmenter program causes any problem, then it is too dangerous to use, surely?

Point taken. I thought I might try it on a mothballed computer and may yet do so, but I won't try it on an active computer. It just happens to be a category for which there seems to be no freeware (that I am aware of) available.

    Re: Free defrag

There are plenty of free defrag programs. I have used JKDefrag for over 1 year now without any problems.

    Re: Free defrag

Power Defrag GUI is a front end to Mark Russinovich's Contig program, so the latter has got to be a very big plus! Though calling it a GUI when most of the work is viewed in a Command Prompt window is probably pushing it a bit...

    Re: Free defrag

Well, yes but the setup and selection of drives etc is done from the GUI. The actual defrag is indeed done in a CMD window.

    So it's a slight push! <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

    Re: Free defrag

    Thanks for the feed back.
    I tried "JK Defrag"
It took some time, but did a lot. Machine does seem to work faster. Programs seem to load better.
    Looks like a keeper.

    Re: Free defrag

Just be aware that the free defrag products generally do not interface with the XP Prefetch and Vista Superfetch features. See JSKYs - Vista's Prefetch or SuperFetch for a brief explanation of these features. What all this means is the OS will move files around after you've run your defrag program possibly causing more fragmentation. Even though your PC seems to work faster now you are working at cross purposes to the OS if you don't use a defrag program that works in concert with the OS features.
