    Missing page numbers (Word 2003)

My document has a boxed footer that consists of a left justified phase. followed by a Right tab, followed by Page X of Y at the right margin.

However, when I try various methods of inserting page x of y, the words show but not the numbers. So I see Page of , in Normal or Page Layout or Print Preview view.

When I select this text, and click Format > Font, the numbers appear.

If I display field codes instead of field results, no field codes appear.

    What's going on?

I'd guess that there is a problem with the Page Number style. Try the following:
    - Activate the Styles and Formatting task pane.
    - Click where a page number is/should be.
    - You should see Page Number in the box at the top of the task pane.
    - Right-click and select Modify from the popup menu.
    - Make sure that font color is set to automatic, not to white.

Thanks, Hans. I'll try those steps this afternoon, when I'm back on that document.
