    cd dissapeared (windows xp)

Who knows what is happening on this laptop?
The cd/dvd which is accessable via my proofing tools in dos before windows is loaded disappears as soon as windows is loaded.
So in "dos" all tests can be carried out and it is visible in the bios settings. I have access and all read tests are positive.
During windows protected mode i can see it in "My computer" and the device manager
    At this point I would like to say that from the hardware side all is ok<;

It is probably software related. Normally it should do with the default drivers from windows (dvd from Hitachi)
Once windows xp pro is loaded with the users properties its disappears all together. No more it is visible in "My computer" nor in device manager. Strangely enough is seems to uninstall itself as an usb device would do. "The device is ready to be removed"-message appears into the screen.
I already tried the method described at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320553 without any succes as there are no Upper or Lower filters to delete.

What are your suggestions or further readings?
    Thanks you in advance

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

    Hello Hans,

To my knowledge there has been no deletion of dvd/cd recording programs.
With the users login we cannot access nor see the dvd/cd anywhere.(my computer or device manager)
In protected mode we have access to the dvd and recognized by my programs and device manager
When logging on with the users id and password within 1 max 2 minutes after completing his initial loading, the dvd/cd uninstalls itself (hence the message on screen from the taskbar) in the manner as if you uninstall a usb device. no specific error codes are shown.

    in regedit : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/Currentcontrolset/Control/Class/
key: {4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} ----> UpperFilters en LowerFilters (these are not present so cannot remove them to force reinstallment)

I hope this gives a clearer picture.

This is just a shot in the dark, but if you can see the hardware in Safe Mode but not when you allow the system to boot normally, you could try to uninstall it in Safe Mode and remove any associated software at that time. Then reboot the system and let Windows find and install it and then reinstall the associated software, if any.

It is troubling that it is "seen" by the OS for the first minute or two after a normal boot and then just goes away. But that would seem to indicate that something is loading in the background to cause this that doesn't load in Safe Mode. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

Indeed it could be a viable solution as for now reinstalling windows is not an option. So I need to find out if by any chance the user did not "unknowingly deleted cd-related software.
Start it up in protected mode and delete the drivers in device manager together with any cd-related software packages. Shut down and restart and hope for the best. A long shot but worth trying. Need to convince and assist the user.

    Thanks Doc

Re read you post, I see that you do see it in the BIOS.

I think it is a driver issue more than anything. If so, when one uninstalls some of the third party burning programs the driver they installed gets removed and the previous one is not reinstalled.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Dave,

I agree it is or should be a driver issue, and as you say the previous drivers will not willingly return by itself. In BIOS & protected mode it is functional so hardware is ok. What about the windows specific cd related software (the one on the installation cd ???) and the third party software reinstallation.
