Page Number Discrepancy in Word (Word 97 SR-2)

I'm creating a document of hundreds of pages in separate files that I'm trying to index. I've created the {RD FileName1.doc} field code for each of the files. The index generates the text fine, just that after the first file the page numbers are four or five page numbers too low.
I've tried combining the files into a single document with section breaks to keep the chapter dash page number intact. Absolutely no difference. I'd hate to update the index by hand, but no one seems to know why this happens.

    Thanks.

You've probably checked this already, but just in case . . .

If you view headers and footers, then choose "Format page number," and check the section "Page Numbering," you can see if it specifies a starting page number. If so, change it to "Continue from previous section." We had this come up recently, and that turned out to be the problem.

    Good luck,

Ah, that would probably work. However the point of using different sections is to include chapter number and start over again with the page numbering--it's about 500 pages. Obviously Word 97 doesn't like to start each section with a new series of page numbering. (Does anyone know if Word 2000 behaves better?)

Looks like the work around is to convert to text and hand edit result. But I appreciate knowing where the problem lies.

    Thanks again.

So the page numbers are actually right but the index is wrong? That I've never seen and can't help with. Sorry. <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15>

If the page numbers were actually wrong, I'd find every section break and check to be sure the numbering started correctly.

I'm sure someone who knows much more will come along; I'll be anxiously awaiting what they have to say.

The page numbers restart in each section correctly as each section is a separate chapter (so there's the chapter number and then the chapter page number after the hyphen). The Index generates and looks fine, but the page numbers assigned to the index entries in all but the first section are four to five pages TOO LOW.

I assume the problem doesn't occur in single section documents.

    Thanks.
