Re: HARD DRIVE POLL

Let me explain, on my XP desktop, years ago I did partition the singe hard drive, I have 4 partitions. Since then I have eliminated 2 of the partitions and when I ever need to rebuild I will go back to a single partition. I have also added a 300 separate drive and it is still a SINGLE partition.
The only time I now use 2 partitions is when I have a need to dual boot. I see not advantage in using the partitions for file storage on the C drive.
Also if I get a another computer I will NOT be partitioning the C drive.

Our laptops have the single C drive with a "System recover" D partition.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I'm not sure how representative the denizens of the lounge will be. Some of my PCs have multiple drives with multiple partitions, others have a single drive with a single partition, but I am a computer expert. Most people I come across have PCs with one partition, or possibly an additional recovery partition created by the vendor.

Re: HARD DRIVE POLL

I have

an old Windows Server 2003 with five partitions (yes!) on one disk
a new Windows Server 2003 R2 with a single partition on 4 x RAID-5 disks plus a hot spare
a number of new Dell PCs with two partitions, 40 GB plus "the rest", on one hard disk
some older PCs with single partitions each on a single smaller disk[/list]How should I vote?

Given my time again, I would split the RAID-5 disks for a new server into two partitions, say 100 GB for operating system and system-type programs like Exchange plus the page file, and the remainder of the space as the second partition for 'user data'. It just seems to make how I think about it ('the division of labour') somewhat more straightforward than having a single partition.

So vote for multiple partitions.

I guess I should have put in an "all of the above" voting bullet.

Re: HARD DRIVE POLL

I'm a complex beast: 3 Win XP machines and one of them with two partitions - boot and data.
We discussed this recently in <post:=692,411>post 692,411</post:>
A month later, I'm teetering on the brink of going back to one partition, mainly because of the hassle registering Windows.
Next time, if ever, I buy a new OS, I won't partition.
My dual-partition was a good experiment; I'm glad I did it.

Personal notebook: 4 partitions on one disk. Boot (100 mb), swap (1500 mb), / (root, 8 gb), /home (remainder).
Work notebook: 3 partitions - apps, os and day-to-day data on C: (40 GB), D: and F: 5 GB each for "data movement"

Re: HARD DRIVE POLL

Ah - then your poll is obviously very flawed. I would think that 100% of the respondents would have at least one drive.

Re: HARD DRIVE POLL

Well, only 24 votes submitted in the poll but it does show 75% for TWO or more drives andor partitions.

Re: HARD DRIVE POLL

I think polls are hard to put together because there is always a situation that isn't covered. It is much easier to simply ask the question that concerns your interest and then see what the respondents have to say.
