IE7 does not shut down (IE 7.0)

When my wife runs her Internet Browser (IE7) it has started to not shut down properly. The home page will go away, but the outline of the browser remains and it will not shut down. Right-clicking on the icon at the bottom of the display and then clicking on <Close> returns a message that says this program is not responding and it can be ended by clicking on the <End Now> button. I thought maybe there were too many Temporary files on her machine, so I deleted those and this did not resolve the problem. I checked the Microsoft web site and she has, what appears to be, the latest version of Explorer. So now the question is - what next? Do I need to uninstall and reinstall IE7, or is there something else I should be doing first. Any insight, thoughts that anyone would care to share is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

What other programs are running, as one of them may have IE tied up?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I have this problem as well. I have six tabs set to load when ie7 fires up which may contribute to the shutdown problem. Sometimes it closes down quickly. Other times it takes minutes to close, sometimes never.

What happens if you type C: into the address bar and click go ??? Does it go to your C drive and can you then close the browser without a problem ???

Re: IE7 does not shut down (IE 7.0)

Thanks folks for the ideas. I followed Dave's suggestion and found that, for whatever reason, there were mini-versions of iexplore.exe that appeared to be running. Normally when IE7 comes up it takes up 30K + depending on how many tabs you have open. When I looked at my wife's active processes on her PC, there were 2 smaller "versions" of iexplore.exe (around 3 to 5K). I simply shut them down and everything seems to be working fine now. I don't understand where these mini-versions came from or why they were there, but removing them seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks to all.

You may see this when other programs are checking for updates and etc. I have several Family research programs that connect to the web for program and search updates. Two of them are Family Tree Maker and Legacy.
Also remember that these NEW desktop search programs also will search the net for files.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
