Moving messages from one account to another (2003)

    Dear Loungers,

I have five email accounts set up in Outlook and Outlook has created a sixth, duplicate one, which is given the same name as my default email address account, but which only takes in delivery receipt emails that report that a message could not be delivered to the recipient. Recently, I have created another email account based on IMAP. I drag the messages from the server to the inbox that corresponds to that email account.

However, the first two dozen or so messages were copied into the duplicate account mentioned above. I don't know how they go there, especially since they were not sent to the email address that corresponds with it. I want to drag them out of there and send them into the new account I created, but Outlook won't let me. I tried dragging the emails from the duplicate folder into Drafts, and then from Drafts to the new account, but they always end up finding their way back into the duplicate account.

Does anyone know how to get rid of that duplicate folder or how to get my messages into the inbox that corresponds with the address to which the IMAP emails were sent?

By the way, I have those two dozen emails still on the IMAP account, but whenever I try dragging them into to the Inbox, they just copy into the duplicate account (as second copies), rather than going into the corresponding account.

Any help that you can offered is greatly appreciated,

    JMT

There is not always a 1:1 match between accounts (i.e., usernames you own with different ISPs) and Inboxes and top-level entries in the Folder List. For example, you can collect mail from multiple POP3 accounts into one Inbox in one Personal Folders (PST) file. And/or you can have extra PST files for particular projects, for archives, and so on. Perhaps the only "rule" is that each account you access via IMAP will need to have its own entry in the Folder List because you are viewing those messages on the ISP's mail server, rather than in one of your PST files.

I don't understand what is going on with your accounts. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> However, it is possible that you have multiple accounts dumping into a single mailbox, or that you have set up a rule (Tools menu) to move the bounce messages into a different PST. Can you send test messages to your accounts and see where they end up in your folders/inboxes?

Yes, I can; and they always end up in the right inbox. It is only in this particular case that emails are being filtered into the duplicate folder. But all of my other messages always go to the appropriate account within the inbox. It's just those IMAP emails that don't want to go into the appropriate account!
