show numbers as thousands only (Excel 97/SR2)

I have been given sheets where users have entered data as full numbers such as 29333 rather than 29. Is there a quick way to amend these rather than re entering the data

    thank you

There are 2 approaches you can take.

    1. Retain the existing values but format the cells invoved to show only the thousands. To that you could use the format picture "#,##0," making sure in include the comma (or whatever thousands seperator you use) at the end. That way 1,234,567 would show as 1,235 (rounded).

    2. You can divide all the values by 1000. To do that quickly insert 1000 into an unused cell. Copy it. Highlight the cells you want to alter. Select Paste Special, and under Operation select Divide.

    You could use :

    #,##0, ;(#,##0,)

Where the format picture after the semi-colon gives the negative formatting.
