Quicktime vs WMP

Could the difference between QT7 and WMP11 be explained. I would like to know which one is best for my i iPhone which installed iTunes which in turn requires QT,

If WMP is more efficient or just as good, I can remove iTunes & QT, as I don't think I will be downloading music files. Music also require too much hard drive space.

I will appreciate all answers and opinions.

Re: Quicktime vs WMP

I certainly can't give you any "technical" reasons for my opinion, Gloria, but I'll tell you what I do. I don't have an iPhone but rather a Palm Treo Smartphone. On my computer I have QuickTime 7 and iTunes installed for those web situations where they might be REQUIRED. Other than that I'd probably never use them. Once in a great while I will buy a song or two using iTunes, so that's why it's installed. On a few occasions in recent months I have been visiting a web page that had QT video on it and when the QT player came up, it hung my machine (XP MCE) requiring me to end Firefox to get out. Because of those limited bad times, I've tended to avoid QT.

For music and video of choice on the computer I use Windows Media Player 11, mostly because I'm already familiar with its library, interface and other stuff. As you can see here in The Lounge, there are problems folks have with WMP, but I've not been one of those troubled souls, luckily.

As for my Treo, I bought a 2 gig plugin memory card for it and so have a dozen or so MP3 files and about an equal number of JPG pictures, since I was learning how to use the device only recently. ( <post:=687,071>post 687,071</post:> ) That small number of files on the 2 gig card doesn't make a dent in the capacity, but music and photos are the last thing on my mind when it comes to my cell phone. I only did it so I would know how. The Treo has a little music player app already installed, otherwise I would have installed something else.

I'm not so sure that iTunes "requires" QT so much as it gets installed by default along with iTunes unless you opt out of the install during the installation process (if Apple still offers the option to opt out). I don't upgrade iTunes unless it requires me to do it to continue having access to the online store to fund my son's music allowance.

As far as liking WMP or iTunes.... you can have both of them. Way to intrusive and wanting to take over your music and video stuff the first time you run them. I use WinAmp for my music and view the few videos I'm interested in with whatever opens them. I have Media Player Classic, Quicktime Alternative and RealPlayer Alternative and WMP 10 installed for the chore.

Thanks for your opinion Al. I intend to use my phone for just pictures and phone calls. Have you seen any comments or posts regarding problems removing QT? I want to avoid any problems that may arise, so for once, I'm asking before I leap in the pool and find that it's empty.

Thanks Doc, i Tunes has seen it's last sunrise. As for QT, several sites I have visited require either QT or WMP, so I thought I had chosen the lesser of two evils. WMP stays because it's never given me a problem and the footprint is much smaller.

One thing about Apple products is that they just plain WORK. You shouldn't have any problem removing QT using Add/Remove Programs.

You might want to look into QuickTime Alternative. It's a download and you can get the latest version here.

BTW - This is informational only. I accept no responsibility for any problems. But I do use QuickTime Alternative myself and it is currently installed on my system.

QT has a checkered reputation on Windows PCs. Frequent security issues have been the norm for a long time. Other discussion groups regularly trash QT as being unreliable and crash prone.

That's why it's not on my machine. Also why I referred Gloria to QT Alternative.

But Apple products usually do install and uninstall cleanly from my experience. As always, your mileage may vary, as do individual opinions about products.

Re: Quicktime vs WMP

I have QT also but where possible use WMP. Apple let me download QT without iTunes (didn't want iTunes) a while back but now every update that comes up on my screen after the auto check seems to require the download of both programmes!
Anyone know how to get out of this?
I use Vista HP

What about QT Lite which I found mentioned in the link you mentioned? Are they one and the same?

I visited the the QT Alternative website and never thought to look at Wikipedia. You are so right, it's explained perfectly so that even I can understand the difference. Soon as I uninstall QT, I will download QT Lite.

Thank you for the link.
