    IE 6 can't connect

I'm having great difficulty with a friends wireless laptop, which just wont connect to the internet. He's running XP Home Version 2002 SP2 on a Dell laptop.

    I've tried release/renew ipconfig. I've tried lspfix

I've uninstalled the network card, I've googled and searched this forum, but no luck. I've done malware/virus checks.

Currently I'm getting a message saying

" .. the support for the specified socket type does not exist in this address family " when I try an IPCONFIG /renew.

    Any comments welcome.

Any more info I shd have given just let me know.

    Ta

    Hi Colin

Searching around for that error message culminates to me suggesting that you reset the winsock setrtings of the laptop.

Before you do, have a read here:

    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/winsock.htm

This web page provides a good set of links and suggestions. Good Luck

    Re: IE 6 can't connect

    That was quick. Thanks

    I'll have a look there.

I diod google the error message, and got lots of web sites all telling me the full error msg,

Socket type not supported. The support for the specified socket type does not exist in this address family. For example, the optional type SOCK_RAW might be selected in a socket call, and the implementation does not support SOCK_RAW sockets at all.

but no explanation of what it meant or what to do about it, So I'll have a look at your link. Ta.

    Re: IE 6 can't connect

Looks like Ramesh's article did it. Not sure which particular bit ( I think it was WinSock XP Fix ) but I tried several bits, then re-booted.

I spent about 3 hours trying this yesterday on my own, and was getting really frustrated that nothing I tried worked.

I always like to try my own resources first, but I wasted 3 hours yesterday. This forum got me an answer (that worked) in 12 minutes!

Thanks a million Jerry, and all the others who help so willingly.

    Colin
