USB key on windows xp (XP)

    Hi all,

I have a USB key which contains very important data, when I plug in the key on my computer it recognizes the key but when I try to access it the following message comes up: Please Insert a disk into drive F: Is there a way to get the data from the key, I have tried the key on a different PC but still does the same thing.

    Your help is much appreciated.

When you say your computer "recognizes it" do you mean that it presents you with a drive letter in My Computer or that it makes a sound and a popup appears in the lower right corner telling you that it has found new hardware and what that hardware is when you connect it ???

Well it pops up and says that the hardware was installed successfully and then it shows the USB key on my computer as a removable disk with letter F.

    Thanks,

Go to Control Panel -> Administative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management
With the drive plugged in, does the disk show in the list of drives? Try using a different USB port on the back of the computer if there is one or disconnect a working device like a printer and use that port. Sometimes, the front USB ports are flakey or don't produce enough power.

If you still can't access it, check to see if it is "seen" in Device Manager.

Some of these "Key" type of thumb drives have security software on them. This allows one to "Protect" their data. Most that I have seen are not worth having the protection.

Along this line, USB Key another name for a flash, thumb and etc drive. What will be next?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
