Thanks Tony. They must really be swamped - it took a LONG time to download that 127 meg file.

    Al,
This has nothing to do with download speed, but when installing new versions of software do you first remove the old version ?

I've never found it necessary to do so with Open Office.

It was only a download, Paul, NOT a simultaneous install. Open Office doesn't do that. As Ian has said, I don't have to remove Open Office prior to updating. They handle that process quite well.

    Re: OpenOffice.org new version (2.4)

I don't know whether this would apply to anyone other than me, but were I to install Open Office on a machine which already had an installation of Microsoft Office 2003, could this be done without OO grabbing any of the default extensions, or otherwise impacting upon the Microsoft Office installation?

In other words, could the installation of OO be made entirely transparent to Microsoft Office, so that clicking on a DOC file would cause Microsoft Word to open? The OO Word-equivalent could then be used by using its File -> Open function, for testing...

Similarly, could the subsequent removal of OO have any impact on the Microsoft office 2003 installation?

    Thanks!

It has been awhile since I did the original install but I'm pretty sure the installer allows you to select the "file associations" you would like, but I let OO take all the Office extensions. Therefore, I don't know if we can trust the installer to honor one's wishes or not.

And I know this isn't a lot of help either, but during my install of 2.4 just now (over the top of 2.3) this screen came up.

    Re: OpenOffice.org new version (2.4)

Sorry Paul, I misunderstood your grammar. I normally do whatever the product installation instructions say, if they DO say. In the case of OO, they CLEARLY say on the web pages that you're supposed to uninstall the previous version first, but I don't do that. The only possible fallout I've experienced is that the Program Files directory contains BOTH 2.3 and 2.4 folders BUT 2.3 seems to have been uninstalled, according to Windows Control Panel.

OO also leaves a junk folder full of installation files on my desktop but that may be my fault for not following their instructions to the letter.

If I've now read your question correctly, it IS an excellent point. I wish more software vendors WOULD be clearer in whether you need to remove the old first.

    Re: OpenOffice.org new version (2.4)

I can't confirm this on the current release, however I've installed version 2.2 on various MS Office equipped PCs in just the fashion desired by BATcher, and haven't (yet?) had an issue where the file associations were not kept by MS Office upon installation (answering the prompt to keep associations where they are).

Uninstalls were also positive, having no apparent ill effects on the MS Office installations.

    I hope this helps.

    Re: OpenOffice.org new version (2.4)

    Al,
Yes, this was the question I was addressing and thanks for the explanation. After having had a few bad experiences installing new over old versions (not OO, by the way), I've come to the practice of uninstalling first on any complex software, especially suites of software. OO takes a while to uninstall and makes you shut down Firefox <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> to complete the process.

    Re: OpenOffice.org new version (2.4)

It's funny, I always close all programs except what's in the Tray when getting ready to install a new piece. This morning, OO reminded me that Fx and TB had to be shutdown in order to install 2.4 but it was nice enough to wait and then continue after I shut them both down.
