Download Problems (IE 5.5 SP2)

I have been trying to download IE Explorer 5.5 SP2 for almost a week. At the start I clicked on the Custom radio button and then on the Advanced button. In the dialogue box that appeared, I checked 'Download Only' so that I could save the download to my disk. The download began, but about one of the way through I got a notice saying that Setup was unable to download the required components. I have been stuck there since, though I have tried repeatedly to resume the download. The stage of the download I am at is downloading Help of just after it. I have tried to delete the downloaded files and even the entire Windows Update folder, but somehow setup produces the deleted files and restores the Update folder. I am using Windows 98 SE on a Pentium II 400 MGHZ machine. In the evenings I have a 28.8 connection, while mornings I use a 56.6 connection. I am trying to download from Israel so if you have any ideas please factor a +7 hour time difference form EDT.

Re: Download Problems (IE 5.5 SP2)

I've also tried the download to disk, I have site with about 30 users with browsing, without success. I assumed that the install must need extra files located on the Web site itself.

I would suggest you try the computer mags that come with free CDs, there is usually the latest versions of browser on them. (just check before you buy.)

Re: Download Problems (IE 5.5 SP2)

Thanks for your reply. I don't think that is the problem. I have downloaded IE updates in the past with no problems. I think this is a Windows system matter.

The Windows Update folder where the IE update files reside contain mostly .cab files. there is also a filelist.dat file which is a log of the download process, that is a list of the files downloaded to date. I think that if even after i delete the entire folder from my disk, IE Setup restores the folder entirely to the state is was in before deletion that there must be some backup folder, perhaps hidden. I think the solution to my problem would be to start the download over, but first I have to find a way to eliminate the restore process so that I can start a clean download.

Have you made any progress with this?

Sorry, I haven't much to offer by way of advise. I also download installs for IE 3 and 4 to our server, to make things easy for myself.

Let us know how you make out.

I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but... what version of Windows? If 2K or NT -- was the original install done as admin and this update attempted logged on as you? I know that anything I installed as admin on my Win2K at work if I attempt to updated while logged on as me (and yes, I have admin right set) throws errors.
