stopped working message on program launch (Vista Home Premium)

I've had two programs which won't work. The first was Adaware 2007 which I uninstalled. Then I installed Virtual Villagers - The Lost Children, which I had run perfectly well on XP SP2 (on a different machine). I installed, it ran fine. Then I quit the game, closed down the machine and the next day went back to it. I double clicked on the icon and the message popped up "Virtual Villagers - The Lost Children has stopped working" I don't know what to do. I've tried the compatability thing but that didn't help. I haven't got SP1 installed. Would that make a difference?

    thanks in advance
    Hope

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

I doubt that Vista SP1 would solve your problem. I see that the game's publisher doesn't have a solution for you either (VV2 crashing in Vista)...

Thanks Hans. I hope someone can help otherwise I won't be able to look after my tribes.... or have a solution when this happens to another game or program.

Unfortunately, the solution for one game or program is likely to not be the solution for another. The only exception might be a driver update.

You might right click the icon and select "Run as Administrator" and see if that helps.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Thanks, but I've done that.

I knew switching to Vista would drive me crazy, but I couldn't find another laptop with XP, the spec I wanted at the price I could afford . :-( I think it's very telling that you can buy the XP and Vista OS at the same price...

Re: stopped working message on program launch (Vista Home Premium)

I can sympathize with your problem, but I think we must all come to grips with the fact that not all software or hardware is compatible with Vista, just as not all software or hardware was compatible with XP when it was first introduced (and NOT because Microsoft failed to release the specs and requirements for Vista in PLENTY of time).

It really boils down to several reasons:
    1) Poor ( or lazy) foresight - Vista won't be released on time so there is no great need to write new drivers or update the application immediately.
    2) economic - simple lack of resources on the part of smaller developers or manufacturers
    3) feasibility - doesn't make economic sense to develop drivers or modify applications for a small user base
    4) greed - if we don't write new drivers or update our application, then users will be FORCED to buy the NEW version of our hardware or software

I really don't think we can blame this on Microsoft.

BTW, according to Ad-Aware 2007 FAQ - Lavasoft It is compatible with 32-bit Vista from version 7.0.2.1 and later.
