No Devices in XP Device Manager (XP SP2)

On a friend's computer today I came across something I've never encountered -- the Device Manager listed NOTHING for the system in question. No, I don't mean that the top-level entry hadn't been expanded; it was missing along with everything else.

What would have caused such a condition? And how can it be fixed?

    Thanks in advance!

Try: MSKB 311504: No Items Appear in the Device Manager List When You Open It

    - "This behavior occurs if the Plug and Play service is turned off (disabled)."

    Leif,

Thanks for the quick reply! Actually, checking PnP services was the first thing I checked, and I did it exactly as you described. PnP was turned already turned ON and set to AUTOMATIC, so I didn't make any changes. Now what?

You could try turning PnP OFF, rebooting, turning it back ON and finally rebooting again.

(Sometimes things need a reminder to kick-start them back into operation!)

I will see that computer again this evening. I'll try your suggestion then and report back. Thanks!

Okay, I tried your suggestion -- PNP off, reboot + PNP on, reboot -- and I'm no further along than when I started. There is still nothing displayed in the Device Manager list.

I'm open to (indeed, anxious for) other suggestions. Thanks!

    From here.....
"The issue is security permissions in the registry. I cannot tell how they are lost
but I can tell you how to fix it short of having to re-install Windows!

You must use regedt32.exe in Windows 2000/XP (as I have not seen this problem posted
for any other operating system). Be very carefull making changes in the regisrty!

You must be logged on as a local administrator to perform this task:

    1. Go to "Start", "Run", and enter "regedt32"
    2. Maximize the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" window.
    3. Scroll down to "SYSTEMCurrentControlSetEnum"
    4. With "Enum" selected click the "Security", "Permissions" menu.

Note: At this point you will probably notice there are no permissions on this key.

    5. Click "Add".
    6. Add the group "Everyone" and the user "SYSTEM".
    7. Select "Everyone" and check "Read" ONLY!
    8. Select "SYSTEM" and check "Full Control".
    9. Click the "Advanced" button at the bottom of the window.
    10. On the Advanced window check "Reset permissions on all child objects..."
    11. Click "OK"
    12. On the warning window click "Yes"
    13. Close REGEDT32

You should now be able to see everything in Device Manager, Network Places Properties,
    and Printers."

Re: No Devices in XP Device Manager (XP SP2)

Alas, I tried this, too -- to the letter (based on the counsel of another web site). Still no joy.

BTW, Norton 360 gives the system a clean bill of health virus-wise. Norton and Spybot Search and Destroy give a spyware-free thumbs up (only a few tracking cookies, now purged).

I don't know if it makes a difference, but this system is running XP Pro, and Belkin Advisor says that the unit is up-to-date with its Microsoft patches. I'm stumped.

Re: No Devices in XP Device Manager (XP SP2)

Microsoft has documented that Security Update KB905749 can also trigger this behaviour (see this article . Microsoft offers a hotfix for the problem, but other users have indicated that simply uninstalling the offending security update also solves the problem. From Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs, make sure that "Show Updates" is checked. Then, scroll down the list until you find KB905749. Uninstall it. You may receive some dire" warnings about the consequences of removing this update, but continue with the uninstall. Reboot and see if Device Manager is now functioning correctly.

NOTE - if this does work for you, then make sure that Windows Update is set to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them". If you have it set to "Install updates automatically", this same update will be applied to your system at the next Windows Update session. Windows Update will notify you that the update is available, but at that point, you can simply hide the update. Hopefully this known problem will be addressed with SP3.
