    slow down

Is my brain suddenly functioning at lightning speed, or is the Lounge gradually getting bogged down again?
It could be "Bell Sympatico" under the influence of YouTube.

I'm getting (for me) abnormally long load times for pages from Woody's lounge - not searches, but just jumping to a forum from Main Index, or waiting for a Preview posting to come back to me.
I'd say up to ten seconds a pop.

Same behavior here, but at times up to three times longer than your experience.

    Re: slow down

The speed of the Lounge is extremely variable. About an hour ago, it seemed to grind to a complete standstill, then suddenly it was very fast again, and now it's excruciatingly slow again (but pages still load). I'll ask Mike Wolfman if he has any idea of the cause.

    Agreed.
If I had to stake my life on it, I'd say that for the past eight years it gets slowish around 9 a.m. New York Time. But that's the case with darn near everything nowadays.

I don't keep logs, but I'd say that it has been more recalcitrant than usual for the past one or two weeks only.
At first I shrugged and figured that I'd just "lucked out", and been on when five people were searching "All Forums", but now it seems to be all gummed up.

Mike Wolfman? I hope he's in charge of backups (grin!)

    Re: slow down

The speed issue appears to be unrelated to the number of users. In the last several days when it was slow and I checked there were less than 12 registered + anonymous (R+A) users. Unless most were doing deep searches it seems like a different problem. On that topic what is a typical high number of simultaneous users? I do not think I have ever seen the R+A total over 30 and I am thus surprised to hear on occasion that the lounge has been overloaded. Daily total visits may be high, but they appear to be well spread out in time.

    Re: slow down

The number of users isn't really a problem, as you noted it's never very high. There appear to be two unrelated problems:
    - Sometimes connections to the company that hosts the Lounge server time out.
    - Sometimes the database engine that coughs up the Lounge pages bogs down.
A couple of weeks ago, the first problem was more prominent, but today the second problem appears to play a larger role.

    Chris,
Same experiences here. Even today it took what seemed like an abnormal amount of time to load a page. Looking at "who's on line" only shows 13 people.
In the past, I have always taken that symptom as an omen that the Lounge was about to take a nosedive in the near future. Hope I'm wrong here. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
    Today it is called golf!

    Re: slow down

I found trying to get into the lounge if I stay logged in makes it slower for the lounge site to completely open. If I log out and then try to open the lounge page later it opens quickly. I think it has something to do with automatically logging in or manually logging in.

In your case it might, but in my case it can't. I rarely (once per six months?) log out and as equally rarely log in.
The slow down appeared to last a week or so, and now it is gone.
Thanks, I guess, to Hans, Mike, and some nameless elves.

5:30 a.m. here at The Centre Of The Known Universe(tm).
    Slow again.
Is there, perhaps, maintenance at this time? Re-indexing, packing, backup etc.
Toronto is, I think GMT-5, so 10:30 a.m in the UK.

    Re: slow down

I haven't been able to discover any pattern in the times of slowdowns.
