Remove HD partition (XPhome 5.1.2600 SP2 build 2600)

How do I remove a partition. Wife has a puter with a single HD (75/80 GB). It was formated into 15.6 GB (C drive) and 58.9 GB (D drive). I don't know why C drive was formated that small but it's full (only 2.5 GB free). Presently D drive only has 4.88 GB of data on it. Both drives are formated in NTFS. It is a SONY vaio MX. Since we are talking about a small drive (in todays terms), is it possible to just remove the partition and make just one large C drive and eliminate the D drive without removing all data and performing a complete reformat? or move the partition to create a 30GB C drive?

To resize partitions without losing data, you need a utility such as Acronis Disk Director or Paragon Partition Manager (neither is free). There are also free partition managers but I don't know how dependable they are.

Alternatively you can use a disk imaging tool to make a copy of all your data, then re-initialise the disk with a single partition and then restore the data.

Since I have a small amount of data on D drive, could I just copy that data onto an external drive and then remove the partition without losing data on C drive? I'm trying to save a few bucks if possible.

You could delete the D: partition, but I don't think you can increase the size of the C: partition without third-party software.

See Free Partition Editors, Managers and Recovery for a list of links to free partition software.

There isn't a free windows utility that will allow you to change the size of a partition. You would need to use a third party tool. Even if you delete all the data from the D: partition and then delete the partition itself that still won't change the size of the C: partition.

You are going to have to use a third party tool to help you here.

A google search for free XP partition-manager did show a number of hits, , but I'm not sure I would trust them with my data!

I know it's tough to "bite the bullet" on software for such a seldom used function, but believe me, it's well worth the expense in the long run. As Hans pointed out in <post:=703,490>post 703,490</post:>, those two are reputable products and even for the rare occasion when this task is required, well worth having in your toolkit.

Thank you for all your replys. I guess I'll have to 'bite the bullet' although I'd like to take that bullet and SHOOT the computer. LOL
    Ya'll have a great weekend.

You could perhaps consider moving some of the files on C: to D:. For example, you can change the location of the virtual memory from C: to D: in System Properties. That may release as much as 2GB if you have 1GB of RAM.

In addition, you may move the browser cache - this may not have so much effect, depending on your setting, but in my case would release 150MB.

Further you might be able to remove the Uninstall information files resulting from installing Windows patches - in my case that would free up 16MB. In addition, there may be as much as 490MB in a folder i386 as a result of installing SP2. This could probably be moved to D:

Also clean up the drive, empty the Recycle Bin, and so on.

As a final solution, you could uninstall some programs, then reinstall them on D: - most programs allow you to install on another drive. For example, moving Office 2000 on my system would release 343MB. Moving the Adobe Reader: 75MB. Given that if you reinstall Windows, you'd have to reload all your programs, you might save time by doing it this way.

Afterthought: I guess this is a notebook, so it might be set up with hibernation. I don't know if it is possible to move the hibernation file to D:, but you could shut that off and save another 1GB or so

There is a FREEWARE partition Manager available at SUPER FDISK

I haven't tried it since I have Acronis Disk Manager but it claims to do what you want to do.

If you Google "freeware partition manager" there are a lot of hits.

You can also gain almost 1.5Gigs for "C" and 5Gigs for "D" by changing the default size of your Recycle Bin from 10% to 1%

Following along with the moving your data idea, you might consider moving your My Documents folder to the D partition. I'm assuming that, like most folks, you keep most of your personal data (pictures, music, documents) in the My Documents folder and that is likely the largest repository of data and thus space used on the drive.

Moving the My Documents folder is pretty simple and you can find a step-by-step explanation and rational for doing it here. HTH <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
