adding row numbers to a view printout (Outlook 2000)

I need to create a view that prints out a contact list with row numbers (so it would look similar to printing row numbers on an excel spreadsheet). Has anyone done this before? I found a method to place an autonumber in each contact record, but that does not solve my problem.

I am guessing it may be possible in VB, but am not quite sure how to start. I can create a new field in each contact record called <number> for instance. But then I would need to compute the value of that field each time the contacts were sorted for a view.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I guess exporting to an Excel file and adding a column is not an option?

Good guess. Edits will need to be made to the data - so the user would have to go back to Outlook to make those changes. An excel sheet won't work. I am exploring an Access option however.
