SP-1 Try 2 (Home Premium)

I'm going to try installing SP-1 again, and see if I have the same issue with my audio.

Would a restore point be sufficient as "backup" or do I need to image first?

Regards,
Chuck Billow

Chuck,
For you, do an Image AND a Restore Point.
Why chance it?

Why is it that I hear (just the slightest touch of) sarcasm there, Mr. Bob

I mean, the SP-1 is supposed to be totally Vista compliant and compatible, and who better to know how to update than the creator, right?

So, either I would need to do a restore to safeguard whatever they are messing with, or I don't trust them at all and I rely on a full image.

Now, in my new-found role of passive, compliant Chuck, 'm just trying to follow the rules, yYa know?

Nah, not at all, Chuck.
Just heard of some problems with SP1 for some people, sooo.....cover all the bases.

Re: SP-1 Try 2 (Home Premium)

Well, here's another question then, Bob:

Since the SP-1 file seems to be the very same one as that which clobbered me the last time, do I really need this update?

'Cause if they haven't repaired the issue I had before (and since it was hardware related I can't believe I was the only one), I'm going to have the very same result of no sound.

Regards,
Chuck

As long as you have the REQUIRED drivers and updates INSTALLED.

I would NOT use the stand alone version, but to do this using Windows (Microsoft) Update.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

That I shall Dave.

I ought to have all updated drivers, as WinUpdate didn't find any needed, nor my Drive Backup software, nor HP, so I'll give it another shot.

Chuck,
In your previous thread regarding SP1, Joe asked you what sound card you have in the machine. You didn't answer. So I'll ask again here. You should be able to find the make and model in Device Manager.

Re: SP-1 Try 2 (Home Premium)

John:

A few things:

Firstly, since Joe originally asked, I found the following:

Realtek High Definition Audio
Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1800 (Model 78xxx, Combo ATSC/QAM)

Although the second appears (to my uneducated self) to be the video hardware, it would seem reasonable that it would also affect the audio;
Since Joe's question, I confirmed with HP the the RealTek drivers had had some problems with the SP-1 process.

I gotta get a better grip on what this hardware is I think!

Lastly, as I just in the last 15 minutes did run a backup, and then re-run the SP-1 update via WinUpdate.

This time it seems to have worked.

I don't know what went differently -- I gotta learn I guess to take better notes -- but it DID work.

Even the RealTek driver seemed to stay intact.

So all seems OK.

I just wish in all this I would understand a little better what and how the process worked to get a better idea how and what to avoid or be aware of in the future.

Joe, Leif, John, all seems to be well with your perennial trouble child. I thank you for the assistance.

Thanks,
Chuck

Re: SP-1 Try 2 (Home Premium)

Make yourself a large note that says ALWAYS BACKUP BEFORE INSTALLING MAJOR UPDATES. An operating system service pack is a major update. You get to define what else you want to call a major update. No matter how testing is done before a release neither Microsoft nor all of the testers can test every possible configuration. Anyone can have a situation that has not been thought about or a combination of drivers and application software that was not anticipated. BTW, setting a restore point before installing an operating system service pack does no good. Service packs make their own backups to facilitate an uninstall. I'd be surprised if any restore points exist immediately after a service pack install.

To what process are you referring that you want to know about in more detail?

Joe:

I think I was just a bit surprised when I had the sound card/driver issue. I think that I have figured that especially service packs my MS left other people's drivers alone, and that since the drivers themselves were all up to date, they wouldn't be messed with... but (sound card driver) was somehow or for some reason. And I had checked that they were all current...

I went back and looked and I DID use a full download the first time, instead of Winpdate. And whey would THAT be different?

I don't know. I guess that I don't mind experimenting / taking a chance. But I still like to know the what and where and how of what I'm getting into.

Regards,
Chuck

Guess I just didn't want you feeling left out, Leif.

Anyway, you've certainly thrown me enough info, that an extra "Tx" doesn't hurt.

Re: SP-1 Try 2 (Home Premium)

I read that the driver issues were with how they were initially installed more than the driver software. So, you may have had the most current software but if the vendor did not have the installation routine setup correctly something in SP-1 could make the driver not work. Then again I could be all wet.

The only difference between using the full download and Windows update should've been the size. Theorectically, Windows update would only download what you needed. Also, because of the driver problems Windows update would check for problematic dirvers and not even offer SP-1 if any were found.

If you want to know more about what you are getting into with any software install look for and thoroughly read the release notes BEFORE you try to install. That is almost always where the 'gotchas' as listed or there will be links to other documentation you need.
