Virtual Desktop Manager

For those of us whose budgets don't stretch to multiple screens…

    Give the Dexpot a whirl!

Dexpot 1.4 turns your monitor into up to 20. It creates and manages virtual desktops and enables you to work far more efficiently and comfortably with many simultaneously opened windows on Windows 95/98/ME and NT4/2000/XP/2003/Vista.

I can vouch for it on Windows 2000 & XP, and would be surprised if it didn't perform equally well on the others.

I've tried several desktop managers over the years and this is the first one that is effective. Apart from the fact that it works, it allows you to configure each desktop separately and supports rules to manage what appears on each desktop. The latter is especially useful with unruly applications. Combined with <!post=AutoIt,592453>AutoIt<!/post> scripts to swat silly "Are you sure?" dialogs this lets you focus on the important stuff.

I have found 2-5 desktops enough for my needs, dependent on where I am. Each is usually configured to suit a specifc set of tasks, or a role.

The only negative is sparse documentation. The basic/essential functionality is easily accessible, but you'll need to play to get most out of it. There is a lot more to it than obvious at first glance.

Note: it is for what the author calls private use. Commercial use costs. See details on right side of Dexpot 1.4 - The utility for virtual desktops.

Quite right, although still reasonably priced from €10, and less for quantities.

Also, the target for licensing is companies, so personal use at work seems subject to your morals and conscience. However, if you get a few other converts hooked as well, it's probably time to cough up.

My personal view with freebies is that if you/your business gains a benefit, then you owe a consideration for that benefit. That may range from financial to an attribution of the source (as a minimum), dependent on the license.

    Re: Virtual Desktop Manager

I've had two monitors for several years now and still I find more screen space would be good. The nature of my job means I get interupted quite often and have to break off what I'm doing and pick up something else, virtual desktops look like just the ticket.

I've only had this utility running for an hour or so but as yet no problems on my Win 2K, dual 17" CRT (main one at 1024x768, secondary at 1152x864).
