saving a docx to doc creates a very large file (2007)

    Hi Guys,
Need some information on why a document which 3.15MB (docx format) becomes 43.6MB after saving as doc format in Word 2007.

The document contains pictures/images and text.. What can be causing the file to be over 10 times the original when saving from docx to doc.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That's very strange, as DOC files usually are reasonably compact. Are you sure Word 2007 didn't save to the combined DOC/RTF format (sometimes called the Word 6.0/95 format)?

I'm pretty sure.. I opened the file in MS Word
Clicked on Office (top left) > Save as > Save as type: Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc). I can send you the document if you like but I have to send it directly to your email.

A docx file is a set of compressed (zip) files. That may account for the difference you see when it is converted to Word's doc format.

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by jscher2000 on 04-Apr-08 12:38. )</P>To test, I created a 6-page document containing 12 JPEG (2 megapixel) images. In .docx format it consumed 2.709 megabytes, and in .doc format, it consumed 2.744 megabytes.

If you toggle field codes in your .doc file, do the pictures change to { EMBED } fields? If so, that could explain the bloating. You can convert them to ordinary pictures by selecting them and pressing Ctrl+Shift+F9.

    <img src=/w3timages/blackline.gif width=33% height=2>

Added: I meant to say, toggle the display of field codes (either from Tools>Options>View or by pressing Alt+F9).

Thank you for the help so far but I am using Office 2007 I can't seem tofind what you are looking for. I can't explain why the bloating is so large (more than 10 times the original docx).

Where did you get this information?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: saving a docx to doc creates a very large file

In fact, .docx is a zip file containing a mixture of .xml files and some binary files. See for example Introducing the Office (2007) Open XML File Formats.

You can easily try it out by changing the extension of a .docx file to .zip and opening the .zip file...

Hans, as always you are right on the mark. That is where I got the file format information. It's also explained in "Advanced Office Documents. 2007 Edition".

In my little test, me too.
<hr>I can't seem to find what you are looking for.<hr>
Field codes normally display their results. To view the actual codes, press Alt+F9. If nothing changes where the images are displayed, then you can forget about this theory. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> (Remember to press Alt+F9 again to toggle back, or you will be confused when you look at your page number fields.)

Re: saving a docx to doc creates a very large file

Ok guys, I've changed the docx to zip and extracted the files.. the total size was about 3.45MB (Original docx was 3.15MB.) It stil doesn't explain why when you save as doc in MS Word 2007 the file gets bloated to 40MBs.
    Any other ideas?

Re: saving a docx to doc creates a very large file

Would it be possible to create a reduced copy of the .docx document that is less than 100 KB but still exhibits a large increase in file size when converted to .doc? You could attach this .docx file to a reply.
