Re: saving a docx to doc creates a very large file

I looked at this file last night. The problem seems to be the way Word 2007 tries to preserve some new features relating to inline images: lines and shadows. Word was taking a compact JPEG image (e.g., 100KB) to which lines and shadows had been applied, and resaving it as a much larger image in order to preserve the appearance of the image framed by the new features. If you export the new .DOC to .HTM, each PNG is about 500K.

Stripping the new features from the pictures before saving to the old format bypassed the problem. Unfortunately, I was not able to find the correct line-related property(ies) in the new object model in order to remove them, so an automated solution is still on the "to do" list.

    Hi Jefferson,

Maybe changing the compatability options from Word 2007 to one of the earlier versions is all that's needed to fix this. See under Word Options|Advanced.
