hidden buffer or cache? (5.5)

I have IE 5.5, and win98, but the same problem occurs on 5.0x and 95B.
When I have used the browser a lot, and opened and closed windows for a while,
and I try to open something in a new window...
a) I see a blank (though it might print what should be in the new window)
if i click on the Favorites menu or Links, say, a tiny square appears instead of the dropdown list
c) sometimes IE soon crashes
d) if I get out of IE, and then restart it, no problem
e) the Links list, for instance, is in alphabetical order, regardless of how I had rearranged it,
after a crash.
I have RAM of 128, and system resources look OK on the resource meter,
and "Temporary Internet Files" deletion doesn't save me, once the difficulty appears.
I also have a very large swapfile.
Note: reinstalling IE, and using the "Fix" option in Add/Remove doesn't help either.
Anyone have any idea what the problem might be?
Thanks, Gideon

Hi. Thanks for this idea. I'll probably try it (i've sent for those instructions), but ...
It makes no sense to me that this problem would happen to me on two separate computers,
an older Quantex and a newer Dell, acquired at different times, if it were just accumulated trash
on the hard drive. And, I have tried extremely hard to clean things up using all kinds of advice that I've found on usenet sites, from MVP's, etc. Nothing seems to make any difference. --g

Re: hidden buffer or cache? (5.5)

Personally, I don't like 5.5. I've got 5.0 at home with Office 2000 and a few other programs, and 5.5 at work. It crashes on me at work once or twice a day (just IE), but I'm running 4 versions of Office, among many other things...

Let me know if the cleanup helps or not. It's standard troubleshooting we do at work ALL the time. See if the IE settings help, too. I do have other resources I can check, so don't give up.

Hi, Gideon. May be that you just need to clean up the "rest" of your hard drive.

Re: hidden buffer or cache? (5.5)

I POSTED THE FOLLOWING YESTERDAY, BUT I SPOKE TOO SOON.
MY PROBLEM IS STILL WITH ME, NOT CURED BY CACHESENTRY.
I'LL LEAVE THE POST UP, THOUGH, BECAUSE THERE MIGHT STILL
BE SOME VALUE IN IT. --- SORRY, AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, GIDEON
-----
Problem solved in practice, though still a puzzle as to the detailed cause:
I want to stress that I am grateful for the advice on how to "clean" various places.
However, as I had implied, I had gone to a lot of trouble to do all kinds of cleaning, by methods that I scoured usenet to find. (I have not yet used the last procedures suggested in the original, gracious reply to my posting in Woody's Lounge).
And, I am puzzled as to why my various computers with win95/98 and IE5.X all had the same problem,
and have never received a satisfactory specific suggestion as to why.
This has been going on for many months.
I have found a solution, viz., installing and using CacheSentry. I don't know why it helps.
However, it apparently solves the problem of IE thinking it has no room when it has tons.
It can be found at
http://www.mindspring.com/~dpoch/eni...chesentry.html
and I am grateful for it. It seems to be a tiny, innocuous program,
and it certainly has been helpful for the health of my IE process.
With much appreciation,
Gideon

On most machine running IE, one will find a file "hosts", just delete it and a lot of problems go away. It will be found in the Windows folder or even in the system32 folder. Just use "Find" (Windows key+f) and type in hosts, and search ALL drives and subfolders.

Hosts is a file that can list different site, and some software will add a site when installed. The one you will see the most is from Norton's. This is suppose aid in visiting a site, but is not a cookie.

Another file that needs to be deleted at times is the "index.dat" in the internet temp folder, but is can not be delete from the account that you are logged in as. The best thing is to log in as admin or boot to DOS and delete it from there. This is one that gets a lot of people in trouble on the job. It contains a listing of every internet site that the user has visited. This aids IE in loading faster.
