There are a lot of KB articles regarding GPF's in USER.EXE, many of which are related to other apps, but show up in your browser or Control Panel. Just as a "stab in the dark," do you have a lot of sounds installed? If so, Article Q114820 may help. It's pretty straight forward, but I don't know if it would in any way apply to you or your daughter.

If you want to look through the KB, instead of selecting a product, select all Microsoft products, and do a search on Keywords fault user.exe and all words. If you find a likely candidate, but have trouble understanding the steps, let us know.

Sounds? Am lost. I read the Article..have no idea what they are talking about. It says 107 sounds..where do I find out how many I have? This is the type of no-help data that KB always uses..doesn't explain where to find things, etc. I have read every article in the KB about gpf...still don't tell me anything.

Hi
A Search for *.wav might tell you something. However, the main question I would ask is : Do you have to use Windows ME? If so, you have my commiserations; if not I suggest Windows 2000 Professional without further delay.

MerC
Yes, I have to use WinME..was pre-installed in this computer when I got it 10/00..computer was replacement for a lemon-went-out-of-business-computer-company (VBox)..actually I got the better deal as to upgrade with processor/DVD/Gig,etc.
I did have Win98SE with other computer..but, dummy me..didn't burn a copy of CD (no access to burner either ). I really don't have a use for 2000 Pro either..am just a home PC user...I don't even have a use for Word (don't gasp..but is true).
I didn't start having these problems until recently - IE 5.5SP2..no other software installation... dang it...if my memory serves me right...these things may have started when I decided to learn how to get gifs, etc and d/l Irfanview...but THAT shouldn't cause these error messages??? I have Norton Firewall/Antivirus - updated/checked daily/Utilities2001/Ad-aware (latest version)..I scandisk/defrag faithfully..I don't play around in the Registry
On the *.wav...if I have no use for them..do I delete them or what? This is a complete novice here as to these things. I will check out the wav...see what is lurking.
Thanks for your help

Update..did the search for *.wav..have 274 objects...mainly for the 'Interactive Training Program' in WinME and all the stuff for the screensavers (which I don't use at all).
Example of data (Training): AddingAPrinter.wav
C:WindowsHELPMITTrainingWinMilContents
901 KB (922,714 bytes)-size...912 KB (933,888 bytes)-size on disk...Archive is checked
then..further on down..same thing again, BUT
C:WindowsOPTIONSSBSIWAVE
same # of KB,etc but Read only is checked.
Do I need all of these screensaver wavs?? Do I really need these wavs for the Training Program?
Other wavs are for email/yahoo chat/etc.
Need some guidance, please.
TIA

darn it..forgot to ask...I did d/l that Quicktime for a reason...was a post here in Lounge..but I have forgotten what the forum was...I did do a search..but what showed up wasn't what I wanted..something to do with the quality or lack thereof for maybe XP something...anyway..I uninstalled Quicktime...could this have caused my USER.EXE to start sending messages? It was uninstalled the proper way.

Re: GPF in USER.EXE (IE5.50.4807.2300 SP2)

Hi
Not trying to avoid the issues, but as I don't use ME or XP, I don't think I ought to say anything at this point, except that Win 2k is perfectly ok for a home desktop system (like mine) and is recommended as the least likely to throw up the sort of problem you're experiencing. QuickTime is needed for playing Apple-style videos on a PC, though whenever such a need has arisen for me, it's been there in the same location as the files. I doubt its proper removal would cause any trouble with user.exe.

btw just because your system came with an os on board, doesn't mean you're stuck with it for ever.

Cheers

I agree with MerC, I am some what a power user and do test Software. I have one system (desktop) that is dual boot of Win 98 Fe and Win 2K, and another one (laptop), with Win Me and Win XP beta. A lot of people go and start deleing programs which may give you some of these user errors, because they were NOT un installed properly.

As for "I did have Win98SE with other computer..but, dummy me..didn't burn a copy of CD" this is why MS is going to Product Activation and you will find that others will follow.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I wasn't implying that I was a 'rat' as to filching a copy of the Win98SE...it's just that everyone says that 98SE was alot better than ME...I have paid for every piece of software that was needed - other than free d/l.
I would have liked to have been able to get the MSBackup program from the old computer...this ME doesn't have it at all - OEM version ...but in the Help section, I do have the entire instructions on how to use the MSBackup...kinda stupid of the OEM to include it when they wouldn't include the program itself ...grrrrrrr!
What I am trying to say, is that I am stuck with ME...can't afford 2000 or anything else
Need a response to the WAV thing...please.
TIA
