    Desktop Search (5.1 (build 2600) SP2)

I've just started a job where the Windows has this "Microsoft Windows Desktop Search" tool, in place of the normal search utility.

    It's doing my head in!

I've tried adding the network drives & done the indexing, but the bloody thing couldn't find anything.

So, what I'm hoping for, is someone knows how to get the default search utility back.

Are you allowed to uninstall it using the Add or Remove Programs control panel, or is that disabled or against company policy?

Will doing this make Windows revert back to the default search utility?

    Cheers mate.

Just have to run it past our system administrators.

Now it could be configured differently on your PC, but WDS or WS on my PC has the usual field in the Taskbar and it's added to the Start Menu. Let's forget those for now. (Since if I click on "Windows Desktop Search" in the Start Menu, the window that comes up isn't configured with the Search Task Pane shown. Though it can be turned on via menu easily.)

Instead´try the usual Search on the Start Menu (or Winkey+F), where ypu used to start the Search Assistant. This brings up the WDS with task pane shown.

What happens if you click in the area I marked? On my PC it brings up the old Search Assistant. Though in that one I don't have the puppy! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Oh yes, the screen shot text is in Swedish, sorry for that, but it should be easy to find. The marked area says "Click here if you want to use the Search Assistant".

You may just need appropriate ifilters installed to index a particular file type. See Toolbar Help: List of searchable file types and Channel9 Wiki: DesktopSearchIFilters.
