    windows won't let me install i (win98se)

I Have tried to install outlook express from windows using the add remove , it tells me I already have the latest version on my system. at one time I did have outlook express but was having problems with it and removed it. I would now like to get It back. I read in a post to make a new folder named outlook express in c: programfiles and that might work. I did this to no avail. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to get outlook express back as I prefer it over outlook.

I had an idea it is installed by default with IE. Have you tried re-installing that?

there is a registry entry you can delete that resets some of the install information, but i'm not sure it controls outlook express.

what version of IE/OE? some have a repair option and that should reinstall express.

Yes I have tried that, but I have IE5.5 with internet tools. IE won't let me remove it but it will let me repair it, which I have done but it does not reinstall outlook express. I tried putting the windows cd in and checking the box for adding outlook express, what happens then is microsoft update appears and gives me a choice of quitting or , if I check advanced, the choice of downloading the whole Internet explorer program which I have tried to do before, I takes many hours and before it is completed my ISPquits the download. I don't have a cd for internet explorer, it was preinstalled with my dell system. I have checked with Office Depot & Office Max , All I can find is AOL Disks Ugh.

have you purchased any new software since IE5.5 was released? If so, there is a good chance, it's on the program cd. browse the cd's with windows explorer to see if there is an IE folder.

Hi mj, The only Programs I have purchased is Norton Utilities, Winfax Pro10.0 and Caere OmniPro10.0.
These Programs would not have any thing about Outlook Express that I know of.
Thanks for your effort. I appreciate it, maybe something will turn up sooner or later.

I'd be tempted to try uninstalling Outlook and trying some of the things you did above again. You should be able to reinstall OL again without losing anything should you need or want to.

browse the Norton utilities cd - i think it requires the latest version of IE. Might want to browse the newer AOL cd's if you haven't thrown them out - it uses IE too.

You might try to uninstall OE with Norton and then see if it will reinstall through Windows Setup. Norton should be pretty thorough about uninstalling everything to do with OE, so Setup may see it as more of a blank canvas, where now it sees some vestige that fools it into thinking OE is still there.

Thanks to Maryj,Leif,Sparky and anyone who tried to help me restore Outlook Express.
I finally got up the nerve to go into regedit and deleted everything that pertained to Outlook Express.
I then went to the add/remove and Installed it from Windows98se but not without it complaining that I had the latest version already installed. I checked the install from scratch and then it installed.
Thanks so very much for trying to help me. It is very much appreciated.

    Hey MaryJ,
This is just an FYI for future reference. In "Dirty" Dick Matthews column in Maximum PC Sept. 2001 he mentions a utility called IEradicator that allows quick and complete removal of IE from 3.0 to 5.5 from all Windows 9x systems. Says it's available from www.98lite.net. I have no personal knowledge of either the site or the utility, but it sounds like just the thing for this situation.
