Java - Programs/Files ok to delete

    Hi -

I ran AVG Anti-virus and began to notice that when Java was being scanned, it seemed to take an inordinate amount of time. When scan was completed, I went to Add/Remove programs and listed there is:
    Java 2 Runtime Environnent SE v1.4.2_03;
    Java™ SE Runtime Environnent 6, update 1
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0, update 6. All are “rarely used.”

I then went to Program Files and saw
    J2re1.4.2_03
    Jre1.5.0_06
    Jre1.6.0_01
with Dates modified of July ’05, Jan. ’06 and June ’07 respectively.

Which of these is safe to delete?

    Thank you.

    Acer,

Looks like the latest Java is update 4 but I've only kept Jre 1.6.0.04 in the programs folder and Java 6 Update 4 in the addremove list.

Works for me and I have always deleted the older version once I have done an update.

    Yes,

I had that problem as well. Then I came across JavaRa So far it doesn't seem to have done any harm, but of course YMMV...

The current version is Java (tm) 6 Update 5. The corresponding folder in Program Files is C:Program FilesJavajre1.6.0_05. You should be able to update to this version from the Java control panel (activate the Update tab, click Update Now). You can then delete all other versions from the Add or Remove Software control panel (do not simply delete the folders from Program Files!)

SE means Standard Environment. Sun has changed the naming of the runtime environment a few times, and it can also depend on how/where you downloaded it. But you only need the latest version so you can delete Java (tm) SE Environment 6 update 1.

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by acerfmayer on 13-Apr-08 17:56. Sorry - forgot to ask: in Program Files I have, in addition to the recent update, jre1. 6.0_01
Is it safe to del this? Thanks!~
)</P>One more question, please:: what is the difference between Java(tm) x update and Java (tm)SE Runtime Environment…

    After updating, I have in Add/Remove :
Java (tm) 6 update 5 and
Java (tm) SE Environment 6 update 1

Should I delete the latter? The “SE Environment” is what’s puzzling me: the difference between them and if it’s needed.

    Many thanks,

And if any subfolders remain in C:Program FilesJava except jre1.6.0_05 after deleting the other versions in the Add or Remove Programs control panel, you can remove those subfolders safely (they should be almost empty anyway, in contrast with the jre1.6.0_05 folder).

Re: Java - Programs/Files ok to delete

"you only need the latest version" is 99% correct; and it should be 100%, BUT…

If your application checks for the Java version, as Primavera does, you can run into problems. It seems some appications rely on a specific Java version and insist on having "their" version available (and sometimes only that version!).

The version "specificity" may simplify support for application vendors, but can complicate life for users.

Thanks for the warning, that's good to know. (I've never encountered an application that required a specific version of Java)

Unfortunately, I can vouch for Tim's statement. We also have an application that requires a certain Java version (not build but version). It is one of those business applications that if you aren't a user you'll probably not have heard of it. As the users of it know the requirement I won't list it here.

Re: Java - Programs/Files ok to delete

Unfortunately is right. This sort of thing can create hard to resolve problems, especially if they only affect an infrequently used application. The symptoms may surface only after the Java update is a memory.

Fortunately Primavera at least tells you if it has a problem with Java, and loads the version that it wants, if you allow it. Less fortunately, what it doesn't tell you is whether you should first have uninstalled and deleted all other traces of Java, or whether just reinstalling the older version is enough.
