Open File Dialog - Mouse Wheel Not Active (2000 9.

I am running this version of Word 2000 (OEM from an earlier Dell which is being parted out) under XP Pro (installed new by GamePC as of 3/10/08.)

I notice that when I invoke "open file" in a master-folder with many sub-folders, the program places the cursor on the first document filed under the master-folder. The wheel on my mouse does not drive the cursor to the top of the list on opening the menu. Once I single click on the selected folder, (not opening it) the mouse wheel begins working. Is this a preference option that I can set? If so, I'd like to have the wheel active as soon as the menu opens.

    Thanks,

When the Open dialog is activated, the focus is on the File name box, so that you can start entering a file name, not on the list of files. You must set focus to the list of files before the mouse wheel will work. There is no setting to change this.

(I tried writing a macro that hijacks the FileOpen action, but it didn't work.)

    Thank you, Hans!

Now I see that the menu is anticipating an entry in the box. It should have been obvious, I think. I've often used a fragment of a name to find several related files in the hope of finding the right one, e.g., '1394' to find documents about an external hard drive box I have.

    Thanks,
