CODEC's

How does one determine which CODEC files need to be installed?

We have been trying to download converted youtube files and we can NOT open these mpg files.

Which application did you use to convert YouTube video to .mpg?

    Dave,

Why not make it easy on yourself and use this site to FIRST convert those YouTube files (.flv) and download them using this online converter/downloader: Online FLV Converter?

On that same homepage you will find this same feature for download here: Download installer for (XP and Vista). I've been using it for a couple of months and it works flawlessly. The quality is far better than some other online converters. And, it also has the ability to convert .flv files to .mov format for MACs, which my wife uses. That too has worked flawlessly.

Then try using the "download" version and do it from your hard drive. I've had no trouble using either; YMMV.

If you have one particular file you have had trouble with, why not provide the URL and I'll try it on my end and let you know the results.

Is it possible a firewall is blocking things?

We have tries several different youtude addresses and several converters. We finally found that CatchVideo.net works great.

We tried installing several of those and they all wanted permission to install Zango which is a ad searching program.

    Re: CODEC's

Just tried "CatchVideo.net" and although it works, the quality isn't as good as the one I use. Perhaps it is the format? CatchVideo converts to .mpg and the other converts to .dvi.

No indication of "Zango" on my system.

I don't know how to determine which codec files need to be installed but I added this codec pack to my son's Vista laptop and it seems to have kept him happy.:

    Re: CODEC's

Sorry for the delay, busy weekend with the children.

I don't think this codec pack is Vista specific. As far as I know it is just a handy easy to install bundle of all the latest versions of the individual codecs that make it up.
