    Map doesn't work (Home premium)

    I've tried finding info on why this won't or shouldn't work, and can find nothing.

    I'm trying to map a local folder to a drive.

    I set the sharing, and it does appear in the list of shares. But, when I go to actually do the mapping, I get the error below. I've tried removing the name/map and re-doing after re-booting. Didn't help.

    What the heck is wrong with what I'm trying? I don't think it is too crazy to want to do a mapping, is it?

    You need to give us the FULL path that you used to defind the share and mapping.
    With what you have posted in the past about these mappings and share issues, we need to know the FULL story not just what you want us to know.

    You also need to make sure that your sharing was set to allow share users to make chages to the shared files.

    You might start out by listing ALL of your Mapped drives and their share definded path.

    Dave:

    I'm sorry.

    I now only have two mapped drives:

    t: tbobackup_f
    u: tbouproot

    I was trying to set

    p: C:UsersCWBillowDocuments
    n: C:UsersCWBillowDocumentsGraphicsIcons

    I HAD these set.

    T: and u: are still in place.

    IN past "discussions", I was pointed by the to a web link that talked about setting IRPStackSize via registry entry

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesL anmanServerParameters]
    "IRPStackSize"=dword:00000032

    which is part of my image file of just hardware and mapped drives.

    and then, with no (*truly*) program installs (on advice, I was letting everything alone for a couple days), and then, I ad no access to p: or n:. T: and u: are fine, as noted.

    I am set as the owner on both of these shares, and "Everyone" can read them, but not write or change them.

    Is THAT it?

    Re: Map doesn't work (Home premium)

    Update:

    So i can use the subst command in a batch file and it sets the mappings fine.

    It didn't however, seem to work as part of either autoexec.bat or autoexec.nt.

    So the only way I could do it at startup is with a batch file?

    Dave:

    I just tried setting n: andp: using "subst".. and that worked.

    But when I run a "dir" of either, I get a "beep" from my machine.

    So why would THAT work, and is that "beep" abadthin?

    As long you continue to TWEAK your registry I will refuse to provide any more information.
    There was NO need in changing your stack size.

    Sorry, good luck.

    Dave:

    As stated, *that* "tweak" came from this board as a solution for this exact problem,.

    I'm sorry I need to somehow segregate valid useful info from other writing.

    Dave:

    My bad. It was in <post#=682,756>post 682,756</post#> that I was referred to http://office-watch.com/kb/?177078.

    I had carried it forward, thinking that the solution would work again.

    Thanks for your help.

    Does that mean you removed the registry change? Did you re-boot after removing it? Can you now map the drives?

    Did you re-boot? This error is different from the one you posted at the beginning of this thread. This error looks like either a permission error or possibly a firewall issue.

    Joe:

    I rebooted again just to be sure... same error.

    I tried with my firewall disabled and got the same results.

    I own the folders in question, so should permissions be an issue? But I did check that as well, as I have control of both.

    Re: Map doesn't work (Home premium)

    Vista has enhanced security in comparison with other versions of Windows. For instanse, you could not map a folder on the local hard drive from Windows Explorer "Map a Network Drive" wizard.

    Probably, to map a folder on local drive you run a script from Command Prompt with elevated Administrator privileges. But because mapped drives are associated with LUID (an authentication ID), and because elevated applications are using a different LUID generated during a separate login event, after you restart your computer logon to your account (and no more to elevated Administrator account), it will no longer see any mapped drives.

    Try to set permissions to the folders you want to map for "Everyone" . To do so, for each shortcut in Documents folder, and then for Documents folder itself:

    - On Properties window, click Security tab; then click Edit tab under "Group or user names";
    - on the next screen, click Add button under "Group or user names";
    - on the next screen. click Advanced button;
    - on the next screen, click "Find Now" button and then select Everyone on Search Results list; click OK;
    - click OK agin;
    - set required permissions and click Apply, OK;
    - click OK to close Properties window.
