    Watched Threads Again

A little over a year ago I made a new thread <post#=629,341>post 629,341</post#> regarding posts not being updated as "read" posts, after actually reading them. It continues on in <post#=631,325>post 631,325</post#> and finally Claude was able to fix this problem somehow <post#=637,171>post 637,171</post#>

Now I notice that it is back again. Same thing happening.
I can reply to a post in my watched threads, then go back to Control Panel and my post shows as an <big>UNread</big> post!

Hopefully, Claude has noted this fix in his notes somewhere and again solve the problem?

    Re: Watched Threads Again

I think I have mentioned earlier and I still see, every now and then, that when I have made a post and return to "Personal Control Panel" I find suddenly a "New"-mark at some posts in my Watched Threads list. Even though there are no new posts in those threads. Typically it is a thread that I posted to before the last one. Don't know if it's the same issue (I don't have any red numbers (unread items) in my Watched Threads list).

    Completely off topic /sorry Bob/: I think it's time for spring cleaning of those inter-webby-tube thingies. For ex. today it can take minutes for a page to load, if ever. Then suddenly, "normal" pace, then crawl again. <img src=/S/crybaby.gif border=0 alt=crybaby width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/crybaby.gif border=0 alt=crybaby width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> No 404 or similar, only the top inch of the page with Lex sleeping.

    Re: Watched Threads Again

I don't use watched threads, but sometimes the Main Index or Control Panel will indicate that there is 1 new post in a forum, and when I go to that forum, two threads will be marked as having new posts - usually the one below the most recent thread but occasionally a thread further down.

We've been having problems with wildly varying download speeds for a while now, see the thread starting at <post:=703,313>post 703,313</post:>.

    Re: Watched Threads Again

I never reported this because I figured it's fruitless to do so, but yesterday was the worst I've seen in the past few months. At one point, I thought The Lounge had really crashed because I got a white, error message page from (I think it said) Apache server about overload. That lasted for 15-30 minutes and then back to sub-normal slowness.

    Re: Watched Threads Again

I have got so used to it that I look at both the watched threads "new mark", and then look at the Last Post time for that particular forum under Favorite Forums (if have the forum the thread belongs to under Favorite Forums).

    OFF-TOPIC:
Yes, I remember reading that thread about speed/slow down and understand there isn't much that can be done (until a pattern is found, or something at the web host or similar).

    Re: Watched Threads Again

I suppose I am a bit surprised that the Lounge response has been as good as it has been (on average) given that we share the same IP address with more than 550 other sites. With that many other internet neighbors I would expect, perhaps naively, almost any kind of slowdown almost anytime. A lot of computer power behind that address might mitigate the problems somewhat, though I expect the main benefit of such a setup is low cost to the Lounge and not high performance.

    Re: Watched Threads Again

According to DomainTools, there are currently 3,267 domains hosted at the same IP. I assume that this is distributed over several servers, otherwise we'd probably be going at a snail's pace 24 hours per day.
    And yes, it's a cheap setup... <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Re: Watched Threads Again

Using http://www.myipneighbors.com/ I just got 573 neighbors; it changes almost daily. Not sure why the 6X difference exists between our two sources, but even the smaller number is <big>large</big> .

    Re: Watched Threads Again

    Hi Argus,
I think it's a SIMILAR but not the same problem and not related to server overload, since Claude apparently found and fixed the problem back when I first mentioned it.

The slow load of the Lounge pages? That's a different story I'm afraid, but one I can't answer. I do suspect it is simply too much traffic at one particular point of time and the server is just gasping for air. <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29> <img src=/S/sick.gif border=0 alt=sick width=15 height=15>

Nothing doing on this problem, I guess.
I know it was fixed once before?

    Re: Watched Threads Again

Claude hasn't been online much recently due to problems with his internet connection, so I suppose he hasn't had time to look at it yet. Sorry.

    Hi Bob,

I've been looking at the code on this problem. It relies entirely on cookies. It (the code) hasn't been touched in years, so, all I can think of is that there's a broken cookie in the system...
    Cheers, Claude.

    >I just got 573 neighbors

    Hi Paul

I can't prove this at the moment but something is nagging at the back of my mind that the disparity between yours and Hans' values is probably due to hosts having server farms and some servers holding virtual servers. It is probably the way the two sites are actively searching for the IP addresses, one counting sub nets, the other not.

I am out of my comfort zone on this one but it is only a theory for the moment. <img src=/S/bubbles.gif border=0 alt=bubbles width=31 height=17>

    Re: Watched Threads Again

    Hi Claude,
Thanks for the "come back" on this. I appreciate that.

Although I'm not sure quite what you meant by that. On my end, I have reset the WOPR cookie a few times on my machine. Am I being my usual dense self here again? <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15> Is there anything I can do about this?

This isn't any major thing of course but it is a little annoying when I make a reply and then see that there is a new post on the thread. ( mine ) <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>
