Has Windows Update Developed A.I. ?? (Vista Home

I've just found that although I have my Update set at " Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them ", my Acer has been downloading several of the Updates on its own. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

What are the updates that have been downloaded? Were they installed?

Despite this update came from Microsoft, it is not strictly Windows Vista OS update; rather, this is an update for the database of one of additional Microsoft programs. Windows Defender is similar to Ad-Aware, SpyBot or SpySweeper programs; you need to update their definitions databases on the regular basis (the same as antivirus definitions database). That's why this update is installed automatically for your own good. It does not change any Windows behavior or any core Windows files.

If you do not want to use Windows Defender (if you use another anty-spyware program), you can disable it from Control Panel > Windows Defender.

Windows Defender has its own set of update rules. You can check them by starting Windows Defender and going to Tools | Options. In the "Automatic Scanning" section look at the "Check for updated definitions ..." checkbox. If it is checked Windows Defender will download and install any definition updates before a scan.
