    Address Bar (XP SP2)

When I use File Explorer to examine files in an external hard drive I cannot get the Address bar to display. It seems to work as expected on installed hard drives.
I have gone thru the View>Toolbars and checked and unchecked the Address Bar several times but it never appears.

Is this normal, or did I miss a setting somewhere?

    Thanks in advance!

I have two external USB hard drives and I don't see any difference when I look at one of them as opposed to the C: drive. What do you see, similar to this attachment? Can you post a screenshot, please?

Attached is a screenshot that shows 2 File Explorer windows that were open at the same time.

How did you open each of these?

If you use different Icons or menu listings, you need to check out the properties of each.

Also try opening 2 sessions using the "Windows key+ e" and then browse to the different drives, do you see differences now?
    If so what are they?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Address Bar (XP SP2)

You have led me to some new info.

The G was usually opened using My Computer.
I have found on other icons if I change the properties from %SystemRoot%explorer.exe /e, c: to eliminate the /e, then the address bar will not be shown. On the icon for My computer the option to change path properties is not available. So any drive I open from My Computer will not show the address bar. The same is true if I use the Windows Key + e.

Now the question is there a setting for that option?

If you open My Computer, can you select View | Toolbars | Address Bar to display it?

I'd add a shortcut to Windows Explorer to the Quick Launch toolbar and always use that to browse drives.

    Re: Address Bar (XP SP2)

If I use a shortcut to open my C drive, and then select My Computer the screen continues to show the address bar, and I can select any drive from that window and the address bar will remain. If However I select My Computer and Open, the address bar is not shown nor can it ever be shown even tho View>toolbars>address bar is checked.
I tried to make an shortcut with the Target %SystemRoot%explorer.exe /e, "my computer" either with or without the quotes and I get the message " The path My Computer does not exist, or is not a directory". If the target for the shortcut shows only %SystemRoot%explorer.exe /e, it has the effect of selecting My Computer with address bar.

I will use that in place of the My Computer that was created on my Desktop by the system.

Thanks to all for your help!

    Re: Address Bar (XP SP2)

What happens if you drag the area named "Address" to a place under the standard toolbar? (The toolbar seems to be unlocked, so no need to change that.)

BTW (not you main problem, but mentioned):
"%SystemRoot%explorer.exe /e, "my computer" either with or without the quotes and I get the message " The path My Computer does not exist, or is not a directory"."

    No, it doesn't work that way <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>; i.e. "my computer".

Open up an ordinary WinExplorer; navigate, if not there, to "My Computer", click on Folders in the toolbar (to hide the folder pane). RESULT: it looks exactly as the so called "My Computer" when started from Desktop or Start menu. There are switches for showing the panes or not; /e Use Windows Explorer view etc.

It should work "out of the box", without some extra edit, but:
To display "My computer" use the following path:

    explorer.exe /n,/e,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

Yes! You struck the main problem.

However if I use the system's My Computer icon I can now get the address bar to display. It will, however, not reopen with the folders showing.
Since I have now setup a ordinary WinExplorer to in effect open My computer with address bar & folders I will just use it.

These inconsistencies just drive me crazy. This all came up about 2 months ago when I bought a new computer.
