Removing 'shortcut' tags on explorer shortcuts (Windows XP)

    Hi,

I am trying to use a shortcuts of all my files from sub folders into the main folder as a directory . Obviously when you create shortcuts, microsoft automatically puts a prefix of 'shortcut' prior to the original file name (see attachment). Is there a macro, or way of setting, to remove the 'shortcut' prefix? I know I can do it manually, but there are too many files to do this.

    Any help appreciated.

You can use the free TweakUI XP utility for this (download it from Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP).

Clear the check box indicated in the screenshot below.

If you want to remove the "Shortcut to " prefix from existing shortcuts, you could try using the <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>ware Rename Regular Expression utility.

For creating new named shortcuts, the attached VBS file might prove useful. You'll need to set the ShortcutPath to point to the "main folder" you mentioned. The Name will default to the target filename (without its extension) and the target is (automatically) the file you're creating the shotcut for.

' ShortcutPath - The destination folder of the new shortcut.
' Specified within this script as a fixed user preference.
' Name - The descriptive text appearing on the new shortcut.
' Specified at runtime in an Inputbox
' target - The full path and filename that the shortcut targets.
' In this usage, the first commandline parameter
    ' passed to the script.

The sample usage at the bottom of the script might be all that you need:

    ' SAMPLE USAGE
    '
' Save this script somewhere convenient and create a shortcut for it in the Windows/SendTo
' folder. Give the shortcut an appropriate name, which will then appear as an option in the
' Windows Explorer right-click Send To menu.

Ideal case for a BATch file:<pre>@echo off
    setlocal
    for %%a in ("shortcut to*.lnk") do call :do_rename "%%a"
    pause
    endlocal
    goto :eof

    :do_rename
:: remove the double quotes from beginning and end of filename
    set old=%~1
:: leave off the 'Shortcut to' from filename
    set new=%old:~12%
:: remove the 'echo' from next line and rerun, for actual rename
    echo rename "%old%" "%new%"
    goto :eof</pre>

Cut and paste this into NOTEPAD and save it in the required directory/folder as something like RENAMER.BAT. Start up a Command Prompt window and run it to observe commented output, and, if happy, remove the echo word from where indicated, and rerun to get the rename to happen.

Hi Alan, thanks for taking the time to respond to me. The rename utility look good, but I did not install it due to the warning (on the same site) that the program cannot be fully removed??? Thanks again.
