Let's Do Linux!

I think you should add a 'Linux' forum. I'm playing with the Red Hat beta 'Roswell' and it is pretty good. When released as Red Hat 7.2, I'd encourage all of you loungers to try it out. It has a great advantage over Windows: much lower costs to install, administer, and secure.

Strange, I can't seem to find it listed on the MS product site.

I work with Linux on the server all day long and love it but most people still prefer Windows on the desktop.

If there's enough discussion to merit it, then I'll give it a board.

BTW why don't you just add "Die, XP Registration/Activation Wizard, die!" to your Sig and save yourself the trouble of typing it into all your posts?

Isn't the intention of Woody's Lounge to support Office apps and associated software?

Can Office run on Linux?

Just about anything that enough people are interested in gets in - under the "associated software" banner.

I don't know if Office runs on Linux. But even it it did, I suspect there's a lot of people out there who are deliberately running Linux to avoid MS products.

Has anybody had any experience with Star Office (Windows or Linux flavour)? I had it installed under Windows NT for a brief period before it terminally collapsed.

Well, Robin Trew was at one time seriously considering going that route...

That might be why he hasn't appeared on the new forum- he's had too much fun and success on the "Dark Side".

Re: Let's Do Linux!

Hi
Sorry to pour cold water, but Dell has just pulled the plug on Linux. They will no longer supply it on their systems. They say their Linux web pages were not being used.
I tried to install it not long ago. Hung up completely. Not having the motivation to continue, I gave up.

Consumer inertia?

Re: Let's Do Linux!

I've done Linux, but only to a small extent.

I work with a Linux maniac. To him, it's fantastic news that one single county in the US has chosen to go Linux over windows. But Dell giving up Linux? That just proves that Mr Dell and Mr Gates are all in cohorts.

Shades of fundamentalism- but with computers instead of religion?

I'm not an MS freak. I can see good and bad in MS as well as in the Unix world. But I'm getting paid for working with MS products, and I don't se that changing just yet.
