Upgrading SP1 (XP SP1)

I came across a friend's computer running SP1. I'm wondering if it's viable to upgrade (not clean install) to SP2 using my full XP Pro SP2 CD - not the SP2 downloadable update, but the full installation CD. Also, I forgot to check on the Home/ Pro version status of the candidate computer. I'm guessing that Home SP1 can't be updated to SP2 using the CD I have. ???

Why not download SP-3 & upgrade directly to that version. You can get it from |MG| Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 5512 RTM and other sites. Also on torrent sites if you have a torrent client.

That's great news Joe. I thought I read somewhere (and I hope I'm wrong) that a "base" installation of SP2 was a requirement for an SP3 install. tell me I'm wrong!

Joe seems to be away for now, so... this seems to say you'd be OK:

Re: Upgrading SP1 (XP SP1)

Good news, thanks Al. Now, I'm wondering what, if any, differences there will be between the RTM and further releases:

Q: When will Microsoft ship XP SP3?

A: Microsoft finalized Windows XP Service Pack 3 on April 21, 2008 and
will release it publicly to the Web on April 29, 2008.

Here's the complete Windows XP SP3 release schedule:

RTM (release to manufacturing): April 21
Windows Update (optional update): April 29
Microsoft Download Center: April 29
MSDN/TechNet download: May 2
Windows XP SP3 fulfillment media (CD-based): May 19
Volume license customers download: June 1
Windows Update/Automatic Updates: June 10

The recent release is intended for OEM and Enterprise customers:

I dunno but maybe Joe will, when he returns. Anyway, today is the 28th, so you're pretty darn close one way or t'other...

Edited for joking sake: Ooops, I realized I missed "today" by about 8 minutes Down Under...

So it's true - they are a bit behind the times in ?

RTM (release to manufacturing) for Micrososft means that is the final release software that it is available and going through their external release process. There is no difference between the software you get now and in the near future by other channels. It is actually available on Technet & MSDN now (after those communities screamed on April 21 about not getting it untial after the WU folks).

Also, note that IE7 is NOT part of SP-3. However, if you already have IE7 installed installing SP-3 will NOT affect IE7.

What's the recommendation for SP1 with IE6? Install IE7 (from file) first, then apply SP3?

I'm not sure since the machines I deal with all have IE7 already. I guess though I'd install SP-3 then IE7.

I'm not sure of the IE version, just covering all bases.
