New PC - Update Office Suite (2000)

The company I work for uses for various reason, Office 2000 as it's deployed suite of applications. Up until this month, any newly deployed (re-deployed) PC has been setup with Windows XP (SP whatever), and Office 2000. This month, we've begun to receive new PCs, and the decision has been made to deploy Vista Ultimate on them, with Office 2000 as the suite of applications.

I'm currently installing the software on my new PC, and am doing it in the same fashion I've become accustomed to previously. OS install, OS patch, driver patches, etc.... and now I'm onto Office.

I've install the base PRE SP Office 2000 discs, and am ready to connect to the Microsoft update site(s) to install the various patches, service releases and updates. Here's my problem. The updates have to be downloaded and applied one by one according to the site (http://office.microsoft.com).

Does anyone know of a way around this limitation, or possibly have a list of the bare-minimum patches to apply?

    Thanks for your help.

I can't answer that, long time since I've used Office 2000 and not yet using Vista. If you grab the highest service pack and install that, and then return to the Office Updates for Vista site, won't it fetch and install all the subsequent security patches for you?

That's what I was hoping, but unfortunately, the website only autoupdates for 2003, XP, and 2007.

    Oops, that's lousy. Unless they've issued a security "roll-up," you might have to install dozens of patches. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

Re: New PC - Update Office Suite (2000)

Dave has already linked to a good article about SP for Office 2000.

I don't have any way around this but to start with latest SP. But I would like to mention Microsoft Security Bulletin Search (I have mentioned it before in Windows questions), that can be a help in your searches.

One could of course use Office Online > Downloads. But a) it links directly to the MSFT Download Center and no mention about the KB article (though MSFT Downloads as usual links to the KB) and I think I've seen Office Online > Downloads to be a little slow adding updates around patch Tuesday, Security Bulletin at MSFT TechNet is obviously faster.

You can, for instance, select Office 2000 in the drop-down menu (under Search by Product), and choose SP level, ex. SP3, and click Go. It will show you links to all *security related* MSKB articles related to Office 2000 SP3.

There is a check box "Show only bulletins that contain updates that have not been replaced by a more recent update", that can be very useful since many times a later update do replace an older, i.e. no need to install updates that has been replaced.

Though, I think I saw some inconsistency when checked for Office XP or 2003 some months ago, between what the actual articles said about if an update was replaced and what was shown in the list. Especially if one searches for the individual applications: Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc. and compare. But one has to remember that for ex. an "Office" Office update (usually mso.dll etc.) that covers also Excel and Powerpoint, may be later replaced partially when an Excel update is released. The old update may still be needed for Powerpoint. To read and cover all that can be a real pain. But the "Microsoft Security Bulletin Search" can be useful. It also has links to the Security bulletin summaries, i.e. "black-Tuesday-bad-news".

Thanks for that link Dave -- I've applied the SP3 from that information.

Now, to see if there are any other patches required.

Argus - Thanks for your suggested reading too -- I'm off to look at that also.
