Windows won't start (XP with SP2)

    Hi
This afternoon I went to start my pc and it stops at the Windows screen just before the log in screen and just sits there. I have booted into safe mode and did a restore to the last point and it still stops at the Windows screen. It was working fine yesterday and had not installed any software or made any changes.
I've tried to reboot into safe mode but now it won't do that either.

Has anyone any ideas I could try
    Thanks
    Dax

    Dax,
Since you posted this question, I assume you have Internet access from somewhere else, so take a look at this MS site with some suggestions on how to get your OS to start.

Re: Windows won't start (XP with SP2)

    Hi Bob

Thanks for the response. It looked like I was going to have to repair XP so went to put the CD in the drive and the drive won't open/work, I had to use a paper clip to get it open (Yet there was no cd in it). Anyway after I got it open the PC rebooted on its own and for what ever reason appears to now be working fine including the cd drive.

Ah the wonders of working with computers.
Anyway I have checked a few different settings and everything appears in order. So still don't really know what happened but am grateful it didn't involve heaps of $$$$s.

Thanks for your advice Bob it was appreciated

    Cheers
    Dax

    Frank,
    You are welcome.
Glad to hear that SWH. ( Something Wonderful Happened )

It may well have been the jammed drive itself and Windows thought there was a CD in there to be read?

At any rate, thanks for posting back with your success!

Re: Windows won't start (XP with SP2)

    Hi Bob

Unfortunately it's done it again but at least this time I think I might know the problem.

After trying to unsuccessfully reboot several times and each ending up having it stop at the Windows screen, I switched it off and pulled out the connection ribbon from the motherboard that goes to my DVD drive and CD drive. I then rebooted it and it is working fine.

Now all I hopefully need to do is work out if it's the DVD or CD drive and look at replacing it.

Would you know of any way I can check which drive it may be?

    Cheers
    Dax

Re: Windows won't start (XP with SP2)

Well, the best way is by substitution.

I would put the DVD drive back in first and reboot to try that. If no good, then reverse them and put in the CD and not the DVD. If it is indeed one of the drives ( I doubt it is both ) you have your answer. My bet is that it is the CD drive since that was the one that would not open for you and after you manually opened it, things seemed to work OK.

Also make sure the Data cable AND the power plug is firmly inserted into their respective jacks.

Edited to Add: I HAVE found that the power plugs DO go bad and lose one or both of their voltage supplies.
    ( not TOO uncommon )
You could try swapping with a spare power plug or use a splitter "Y" cable to give you an extra plug.

    Good show, Frank.
Always feels good when you can finally fix up a problem like that. <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>
