Bullets cause Word to Shut Down (Windows XP SP2; Word 2003)

Lately, each time I select text and click the bulleted list icon, I get a message box saying "Word has encountered a problem and has to shut down", which it does after kindly recovering my document. It usually happens when I've selected a number of items to "bullet-ize" but today it occurred with just one item.

Any ideas what's happening and how to correct it?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Can you think of any changes you've made recently? For example, have you loaded Service Pack 3 for Office 2003? Any major template changes?

Have you tried running Office diagnostics? (Start > Microsoft Office > Microsoft OfficeTools)

In addition to Jefferson's and Pam's replies, take a look at Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word,197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word<!/post>.

(Edited by IreneLinda on 05-May-08 13:53. Added P.S.)
Wow, again, terrific support from loungers! Thanks. Replies, in order:

Jefferson: no major changes that I can think of. Didn't even realize there was an SP3 for Word 2003 (sorry!). No template changes. Only recent unusual-ness is that the laptop often won't shut off completely at night. Have to kill the "Windows is shutting down" screen manually with the on/off button. Could that be a cause?

Pam and Hans: Appreciate helpful directions and link. Will try both and get back to the forum with results.

Gratefully,

Linda

PS Pam, just tried Tools. Found 4 entries, but none seem appropriate (Language settings, application recovery - tried it but it just recovers lost docs; Access snapshot wizard). Am I not understanding?

Application recovery should repair the application, but as an alternative, you can use Help | Detect and Repair from within Word.

Re: Bullets cause Word to Shut Down (Windows XP SP

Sorry to steer you wrong. I have both 2003 and 2007 on my computer. Though picks for both 2003 and 2007 versions of the applications are on my Start menu for MS Office, there's only one pick for Office Tools. Because of that, I assumed they were the same. But not so. My laptop, which only has 2003, doesn't show a pick called Microsoft Office Diagnostics.

Thanks to Hans you now know that you can run Detect and Repair.

Hans and Pam, thanks for your suggestions. I now realize why I couldn't find the correct item via Start, but will try the inside Word option instead. Again, I'll get back to the Lounge to report results (likely a few days before I can get to it).

Hans, I just ran "detect and repair" which said it reconfigued Office Professional successfully", I then tried out the bullets and got the same result: Word shut down. I'm now going to check out the link you included and see if I can figure out the problem there. Will post results.

Hi Linda

As unlikely as it sounds, you could try de-installing & re-installing the printer driver if you haven't done so already. This often seems to cure some otherwise inexplicable oddities.

You're right, Archie, it does sound odd, but I'm ready to try anything potentially helpful. Unfortunately, I don't know just how to un-install and re-install a printer driver. If you could explain that (or link me to a site that could), I'll give it a go. Thanks!

Open the Printers and Fax Devices control panel.
Your default printer will have a small check mark in its icon (see screenshot).
Note its name, then select it and delete it.
Next, select File | Add Printer...
Follow the steps of the wizard and select the correct printer type.
At the end, specify that the new printer should become the default printer.

Hans, thanks for the specific directions. Sounds scary, but I'll do it and let you know how it works.

Re: Bullets cause Word to Shut Down (Windows XP SP

Maybe also - still working in the Printers and Fax Devices panel - click File, Server Properties, Drivers tab to check that the driver is no longer in the list before re-installing the printer? I also wondered if it could be a corrupt font - if it's a non-standard font (i.e. not one supplied with Windows or your printer) perhaps you could try re-installing that? Good luck!
