Flash Drive For XP (XP Pro SP2)

Is it feasible to make a restore version of XP Pro SP2 to put on a flash drive to use like one would use a UBCD?

Also, has anyone compiled a list of software tools that one could/should put on flash drive to use to diagnose and/or resolve system problems?

I realize that one would not want to run an OS from a stick, but it seemed to me that it might be feasible to take a weekly snapshot onto a flash drive (4GB) as a recovery mechanism.

    Pros? Cons?

    Enquiring minds want to know.

Re: Flash Drive For XP (XP Pro SP2)

If you are talking about an image backup of a system or drive (like True Image, Shadow Protect or Ghost), it might not be the best option. The USB drivers don't load without the OS so if you had to restore an image that was on a USB flash drive, you would have to first boot to the Rescue CD or reinstall the OS and underlying program to access the USB image. A better option is to put your backup on a secondary HD or partition. But if you have a HD failure, the image on another partition of the same drive wouldn't do you much good.

If you meant to just backup important data and personal files (like your My Documents folder, address book and favorites) to a USB drive, that would work fine.

The list of tools to put on a flash drive is really a matter of personal preference and what problems you are trying to troubleshoot. You might want to Google for "portable" versions of your favorite system tools. The portable versions will run from the flash drive and do not require installation on an already troubled system.

Re: Flash Drive For XP (XP Pro SP2)

    BobH,
For your second question; DO a search of the Lounge, to find what other recommend or sites with software (but as Doc says it's personal preference), there has been at least one thread about "nice programs to put on a USB memory", in a forum that is now called "Other Software Applications", I think.

Arrgh memory, why do I have to remember this, when I don't fancy such programs in general (but maybe for troubleshooting)?

OK ALL YOU WHO PARTICIPATED IN THOSE THREADS, WHERE ARE THEY?

    BobH,
Searching the Lounge or anywhere with "AND" can be a pain if you select the wrong keywords, searching with "OR" makes the search result too big, almost useless. I have no problem searching the Lounge in general, but it can be a pain in this case since:
    Did they use the word:

software, or applications, or programs, or ...

USB, or flash, or stick, or whatever else people seem to call an USB memory (some minority seems to call them Dongle).[/list]Searching ...

    Tiny bit later:
Here are two threads, as example:

    <!post=Portable Applications,543423>Portable Applications<!/post>

I'm not really sure what you're after here, but UBCD for Windows lets you build a bootable BartPE and include pretty much any utilities you want. There a wide range of diagnostics supplied with it. If you can boot from flash drive, I can't imagine it would have any problems. NOTE the download is 224MB though!

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

Sorry to rudely come in. I use partition magic, and in the past made second partitionswith the same operating system on so I could run/seperate a range of software versions. So far I have failed in trying to do this with XP. As its near to your question on putting XP on alternative drives I thought I'd ask the question can it be done. Please throw me off if I appear as a pirate, regards
