    New Email (XP )

** I have Office XP Standard v2002 which includes Outlook.

    Hi,

I have been using AOL as my ISP for the last 10/12 years. I only use AOL for email. For about 3 million reasons (that I won't go into here), I am looking to cut my ties with AOL and am looking to use a new email system. I no longer use AOL browser (now use IE7). I have outlook 2002 that I have never used. For the short term, I want to access AOL email without using AOL if that is possible, in the longer term, I want to completely move from AOL.

    My questions are:

Is Outlook 2002 still a good tool to use? If so, can I use both AOL and A.N.Other new email account. If not, any suggestions as to good current email systems?? I don't want to start using an out of date tool!! What is Outlook Express?? I have done a bit of reading recently and there seems to be pro's and con's..

    Thanks

Outlook 2002 still works well. Compared with Outlook Express or its successor Windows Live Mail, Outlook is a "bigger" program - it has a larger footprint, but it also has more functions: it contains an appointment calendar, and you can create tasks with reminders and notes. If you have uses for these extra features, I'd use Outlook. If not, Windows Live Mail might be a better option. I wouldn't use Outlook Express any more.

You can use Outlook to retrieve AOL e-mail messages: see Use Outlook with AOL e-mail.
Since you can set up multiple e-mail accounts in Outlook, you can use AOL e-mail *and* the e-mail provided by your new ISP.

Cheers Hans. I have kind of set up Outlook, though I think this may be over complicating my (basic) requirements, so will probably take a look at windows live to see if that better suits. I'm glad that you mentioned Outlook express, that you advise not to use. I tried uninstalling this from my pc, and was told that I could not uninstall as was being used by another person or programe. Any idea's, cos I've certainly never used it!!

Outlook Express is more or less part of Windows XP, so there's not much point in uninstalling it.
I don't have Windows Live Mail myself, but I wouldn't be surprised if it replaces Outlook Express when you install it, much like Internet Explorer 7 replaces Internet Explorer 6. (In fact, Windows Live Mail is Outlook Express 7 or so).

Unfortunately, OE is left on the system when WLM is installed. About the best you can do is just delete all the OE icons that are still around after the WLM install.
