Firefox On A Dual Boot Machine (Fx 2.0.0.14)

As you can see in the Vista Forum, I've joined the "clan" and now have a dual boot machine with both XP and Vista on it. This question really pertains not only to Firefox but Thunderbird as well, but I'll deal with Firefox first. When I boot my machine in Vista, I would like to be able to run Firefox with the SAME user profile that I use when the machine is booted to XP and vice versa. In Googling there is a ton of information on duplicating profiles, backing up a profile and even the subject of roaming profiles. But this page makes it look like a pretty simple maneuver for a dual boot operation like mine:

Roaming profiles - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

On that page is this quote which, on the surface of it, sounds pretty simple:

How can I share a fixed profile, such as on dual-boot machines?

This is very easy. Supposing your profile exists for one particular instance of a Mozilla product, you need to make use of the Profile Manager for the other instance of this application in order to inform it of where your existing profile is stored. Simply choose to create a new profile from within the Profile Manager; when prompted for the installation folder browse to and select your existing profile folder. Rather than creating a brand new profile, your application will instead recognize the existing profile and allow you to use it.

Has anyone done this little trick and does it work? Is there a better way other than backing up, synching, etc.?

It is a simple as that and it should work just fine.

You may already be aware of this, but you need to make sure that Firefox is not running before trying to open the profile manager. If Firefox is running the profile manager will not open. Also if you have 2 different versions of Firefox installed, do not use the same profile for the different versions, it can lead to problems. The same also applies for Thunderbird.

Thanks Tony. Today's "exercise" then is to install Fx on my Vista installation to see how it goes. I stumbled on that Profile Manager nuance while reading up on this topic yesterday. I also hadn't thought about the fact that I now have "two machines" to keep up to date evey time some vendor releases a new version of an app I use.

What's that old adage about "...nothing is ever as simple as it seems..."? I ran profile manager and AM able to browse to the file on the XP drive, but Fx/Vista say it's in use, which isn't true. More tinkering I guess.

You have probably already found this, but see Profile in use - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

Re: Firefox On A Dual Boot Machine (Fx 2.0.0.14)

Thanks Tony, I had NOT seen that link yet for I had to leave for work right after making my post. But I do see that parent.lock file there now and strangely, it has a time stamp of 8:06 AM so I do think it might have still been present when I was trying to run from Vista. In a few minutes I'm going to close up XP and go to Vista to try again, so before I shut down THIS time I'll make sure that file is gone. While I was out waiting for my patient in a doctor's office, I also thought about the dialogue I've been having with Joe in this thread about Vista, permissions, SID and the like: <post:=709,367>post 709,367</post:>. If the above file is not the solution, I'm going to try to give permission to my Vista account to access the profile, either by folder properties or changing my Vista "machine name" and THEN adding permission. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks again!

Re: Firefox On A Dual Boot Machine (Fx 2.0.0.14)

This followup post is being written while in Vista and successfully using my Firefox profile that is the same one I use when in XP, i.e. it is located in a directory of my XP hard drive (partition)! Whoooeee, I love it when a plan comes together!

When I shutdown all my apps in XP and got ready to boot Vista, I checked for that parental.lock file and it WAS gone as it's supposed to be. When I got to Vista, ran the Fx profile manager and tried to access the profile in question, I got the same message about it being in use. So, I opened Explorer in Vista, accessed the XP drive and drilled down to the Fx profile folder. I did a right-click, Properties and on the Security tab I assigned Full Control to my Vista account name. No errors or complaints and Fx immediately ran. Here I am, so there you are!

Thanks and a million kudos to Tony AND Joe for the hand-holding! I did get a couple of Vista UAC "...is it OK to do this..." prompts and that's the subject of another post I'll make to Joe, but as Dave has said many times, those prompts are EASY to click and deal with...

Now, in the morning after I get a good overnight backup image of today's work, I'll go back into the Fx profile manager and delete the "default" profile so I don't have to make a choice. One thing at a time.

Re: Firefox On A Dual Boot Machine (Fx 2.0.0.14)

One last post before I call it a day, Tony. I went through the exact same procedure for Thunderbird, giving my Vista account "full control" on the XP Thunderbird profile folder. Lo and behold, running Thunderbird came up with my email files, which are MANY years in length, so it looks like it works in both applications. I am now back in XP to make sure that all is well here as well and it seems to be OK. As I said, I'm going to stop tweaking for the day to wait for a good backup image of this day's work, but I feel that my day of tutorial has been a success so far.

Re: Firefox On A Dual Boot Machine (Fx 2.0.0.14)

One last post on this and I'll quit. I have been browsing the web in Firefox from both XP and Vista, using the same profile, including making posts here from each. All Fx files are staying up to date and I've found no problems.

The same is true now of Thunderbird! I've sent and received email from both XP and Vista and the single set of email files is being maintained nicely in the one profile. And lastly I've now installed MailWasher Pro on the Vista drive and got it setup.

Re: Firefox On A Dual Boot Machine (Fx 2.0.0.14)

Thanks to the great advice in this thread, I now run Firefox and Thunderbird on my dual-boot Vista/Windows 7 system using the Vista profiles with both OSes. Works great but I have one puzzling issue.

Whenever I first launch Firefox in Vista after having used it last in Windows 7, I get the notice in the attached graphic. Subsequent launches do not produce the notice, nor do I ever get it when launching in Windows 7.

This does not seem to be a problem; I simply close the notice and carry on as normal. It is however an annoyance that I would like to eliminate.

I use the Get Mail extension to launch Thunderbird from Firefox. The Net Framework extension was installed (I think??) by the recent Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86 installed on ‎2009.‎01.‎30. I say "think" because I did not deliberately install it.

Any thoughts and remedies would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Regards,
PaulB

Re: Firefox On A Dual Boot Machine (Fx 2.0.0.14)

Although I have extended the above procedure to a TRIPLE with respect to Fx and don't get that popup window in Win 7, I HAVE been getting it ever since last year when I did the XP/Vista thing. Every first-time start in Vista, here comes that popup and I have NO extensions installed in the first place. Never have found out how to eliminate it but other than one thread here in the Lounge someplace, I didn't look very hard.

Al, if I understand your reply correctly, you get the same pop-up as I do indicating that one new add-on has been installed but you have NO extensions installed in the first place??? In that case I think I'll just ignore this annoyance!

No, not the same but of the same nature. Here's what mine looks like.

Re: Firefox On A Dual Boot Machine (Fx 2.0.0.14)

That's even more bizarre, Al. I thought you had meant you got the same "Add-on" pop-up but without any add-ons listed. Where do you suppose your two add-ons come from?

Cheers,
Regards,
PaulB
