XP SP3 Update (XP Pro SP2)

I know there is an update for XP. It is SP3 and I have updated most of my computers with no problem. However the one I use all the time just keeps searching Microsoft's update site and never seems to locate the update. The green bar which I think we are all familiar with just keeps running. So how do I get the latest update to SP3?

You can download the full version from Download details: Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers. Don't be put off by the title. However, it is a 316 MB download.

With the release of SP3 to Windows Update a lot of action is working on the servers, so things are going to be a bit slower than normal.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Although Microsoft announced that Windows XP SP3 would be available on Windows Update now, and through automatic updates in "early summer" (June 10 was mentioned), it was offered to me on my home PC by automatic updates today. The servers must be very busy indeed: although I have a very fast internet connection, the download took over an hour. The installation went without a hitch.

My machine was notified yesterday afternoon and it took about 2 hours for the download and install.
Now the wife's machine has the flag showing. She will take care of it later.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I also got the notification from Automatic Updates last night. I haven't taken the time to DL it yet, partly because of the size and partly because I like to wait a bit before getting most of the updates to see how they behave in the "real world". Besides, MS says "SP3 contains a small number of new updates and should not significantly change the Windows XP experience." So what's the rush ???

See Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: Windows XP Service Pack 3 FAQ for a brief summary of the new features. Nothing to get excited about - 'plumbing' related. As long as download volume is not an issue, I'd download Download details: Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers (and possibly burn a CD) as I don't trust WU to figure things out correctly. That way you can also slipstream it and build a new installation CD if you want/need. NOTE: according to Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: A Subscription Pit Stop on the Road to Cloud Computing, you can only slipstream SP-3 with an integrated SP-2 CD.

Re: XP SP3 Update (XP Pro SP2)

I was a bit busy the last two days, and thought about that so called schedule you mention, WU/AU etc. (although my intention always was to d/l the standalone SP), and also what Woody mentioned about pause for WU due to POS software etc. some days ago (I see he updated that yesterday). Apparently some things got going the last days.

Changing from 3 to 2 waves of releases seems to benefit more European users, Swedish is among the early, <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> (as I would have guessed).

I did a test download of the *standalone* SP earlier today, ~306 MB took a bit over 6 minutes (not optimal for my speed, but really good). I have no intention to install it in the nearest future.

(And yes, if I turn on AU, SP3 is there among some other.)

Re: XP SP3 Update (XP Pro SP2)

Well on 5 of my computers I had no problem but on the last one, the one I use all the time it two hours to download and another hour to install. After installation it slowed the machine to a screeching halt. It was so bad I had to do a system restore to even use it. Now I am going to try installing the SP3 update using the file I downloaded from the link Joe gave me.
