Windows won't start (XP Pro with SP2)

    Hello and HELP!!!
I have for some unknown reason not been able to start my PC anymore. Actually what I mean is it starts but then stops at the Windows splash screen (freezes).

I noticed a similar problem was being experienced by fellow lounger dax1956, so tried what was suggested in that post but still having little effect.

My PC is an Athlon XP2600, 1.9ghz with 768m, I also have a video card with 256mg and have a 320gb HDD partitioned into 3 with Windows on the C drive.

To date I have played around with disconnecting my DVD and rebooting but with out luck, I also did the same with the CD rom again no luck. I have also removed the video card but again the same problem, I even changed around my ram ( currently have 2 sticks, one with 512mb and the other with 256 ).

I have noticed if I switch off the pc for at least 30 minutes and then resart I can sometimes get into the system but after anything between 30 min and an hour it will freeze and need a reboot and of course then it freezes after the splash screen

Next I did a repair of my Windows installation which appeared to run smoothly until I had to reboot and then of course it would freeze again. So next it was drastic action time and I reformatted the C partition and reinstalled XP and again it would install smoothly until it needed a reboot. Anyway after a couple of goes it seemed to install. However the same problem still exists, if I reboot it freezes but if I leave it for a while it mostly starts.

Finally as a last resort, a friend who has a spare HDD has given me a lone of it, in the event that my HDD has some sort of fault.....but guess what all the above mentioned issues still exist. My Normal HDD (Seagate 320gb) is only 14 months old

So now I'm at the point where I'm seriously considering seeing if my PC can fly..........out of my 1st floor window....after all it is supposed to be WINDOWS XP Pro!!!!!!

So please in desperation can anyone suggest anything else I can try before I have to make the 100kilometre drive to my nearest PC store

    Thanks

You'll get better advice than this from other loungers but have you tried :
    - a full anti-virus scan (can you get it done before PC freezes?)
    - if any peripherals are attached via USB, does removing them one by one improve things any?
    - if you have a network (wireless or otherwise) running, have you tried switching it off?
-a system restore to a time when you knew it didn't freeze?
    - uninstalling MS patches one by one?
    - uninstalling any applications installed since the last time you knew the system was OK?
    - importing a saved registry (if you've ever exported one)?
As I said - you'll get better advice. This is me saying what I'd try before I made a posting to the lounge!
    Hope things get sorted

    Sonia,
There is a Microsoft troubleshooting article on Windows startup problems HERE

It has a number of things you can try. Perhaps this will get you "started" in solving it.

If by turning it off for a bit you get it to work for a short period you could be having a heat or electrical problem. A fan could be faulty. Can you open the PC an check.

    Hello Silverback

    In response to your suggestions
Yes I did an antivirus scan but no issues
Yes I have all my peripherals removed (Scanner, printer, IPod) I've got them connected to my other PC so the kids can still print their homework etc
Yes I have it disconnected from my home network
I have tried a system restore without any luck.
Haven't removed any updates, didn't think it would make any difference as the issue only started over a week after the last updates
Unfortunately I don't have a registry backup....however once I'm up and running again that will be one of the first things I do...Yes I shouldn't have anyway
S as you can see I've pretty much tried everything you suggested and without any luck.

As mentioned by Joe Perez in a latter post, I'm now starting to wonder if it is a power issue, as it seems to start up ok and work if I turn it off and don't start it again for at least 30 minutes.
I guess that's the next thing to test

Anyway thank you so much again for you help it is all very much appreciated

    Hello Bob
Thanks for your help, I checked out the Microsoft KB but didn't really get any extra ideas that I haven't already tried

Joe Perez has mentioned in a latter post, I that it wcould be a power issue, 'm now starting to wonder if it is a power issue, as it seems to start up ok and work if I turn it off and don't start it again for at least 30 minutes.

    Hello Joe

Thanks for the suggestion, I've checked the fan and it's working fine (even cleaned it while I was in the box). I guess it could be a power issue, so suppose will have to make the drive early next week and have it checked at my pc repair shop

    Thanks for your advice

Re: Windows won't start (XP Pro with SP2)

    Hi Sonia,

I would lean toward a heat build up problem or faulty power supply unit. You stated that you have cleaned out some of the dust and the fan looks to be OK. Would that be a chassis fan or the fan in the power supply unit?

Try running your PC with the system cover removed. This will allow a better cooling environment. If this resolves the issue, you could try installing another fan in the front of the system box, if it has that physical ability. A fan in the front and one in the back can create a better flow of air to cool the components.

    Cheers, Bob
    Regards,
    Bob

Re: Windows won't start (XP Pro with SP2)

    Hello Bob

Sorry to not having got back to you sooner but got called away for work for a week so had to put the PC problem on hold. Anyway since returning I took it to my computer repair shop and it was as you noted....the power supply box was pretty much on it's last legs. So in with a new one and I'm now back up and running.

So I've just like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who offered their help and advice, it was very much appreciated
