Not starting up after using system config utility (SP2)

To make a long story short, something required me to change the selection in the system configuration utility. I chose "selective startup" and deselected "load startup items". I restarted the computer and when the desktop came back, the environment was different and the computer couldn't recognize devices, especially the sound device. I then deselected "load system services" from the utility and restarted. The computer then got stuck on the black screen where the three blue bars scroll across the screen. I tried to restart using the last know good configuration but the computer still got stuck. Could anybody please help me?

And just to make sure you guys don't think I am crazy, I am using a different computer, not the troubled one.

    Welcome to the Lounge.

Why not go back to "msconfig" and select Normal startup?
You may have to boot into Safe Mode to do this.

Do you remember just WHY you changed the configuration?

Okay, I'll try that and see how that goes.
As for the reason, I was troubleshooting a game that would not start up and in effort to reduce the number of background processes I did what I did. Which, of course, miserably failed.

    Hope that works for you.
If you disable system services, it certainly shouldn't have any effect on a game loading, if fact, as you saw, it will really mess things up. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

In safe mode, on the boot up screen, it freezes at the Mup.sys file. Does anyone know what to do with this?

Re: Not starting up after using system config util

MUP stands for "Multiple Universal Naming Convention Provider", and mup.sys is a Windows kernel driver.
If booting process hangs when mup.sys takes UNC names from I/O manager, that usually means a problem with hardware.

Sometimes it may be caused by invalid Registry entry, simply restoring backup copy of the Registry can solve the problem: press F8 during bootup and select "Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)" from the menu.

Sometimes hardware failure (bad capacitor on the motherboard, broken CD/DVD drive, etc) may be the cause. Usually booting from Windows Installation CD and running Restore Windows option can make Windows installation bootable again.

In rare occasions, damaged BIOS (Basic Input-Output System) can be the cause. In this case download flash BIOS update from motherboard (computer) vendor's webpage and run it from bootable media.

Re: Not starting up after using system config util

I have already tried last good config; it does not boot up even after 30 minutes. When I bought the computer I was not given the windows CD, although I may have just misplaced it. As for the last option, is there a way to know if the BIOS is damaged?

If you are able to get to BIOS configuration screen, BIOS is not damaged.

To get to BIOS configuration screen, you must press an appropriate key when the first splash screen (usually with computer vendor logo) appears.
For IBM/Lenovo press F1; for Dell press F2; for HP/Compaq press F10; for Award BIOS press Delete; for Phoenix BIOS press Ctrl-Alt-Esc; etc (see How to Access/Enter Motherboard BIOS for more information.)
