Close the database, and make sure that nobody else is using it.
Do you still see the second icon (the one with the little padlock)?
If so, try to delete this file. If you can't, either someone else is still using the database, or else the file has become locked - consult your network admin to unlock it.
When the padlock icon has gone, open the database and perform a Compact and Repair Database (in Tools | Database Utilities).
Do the problems persist after that?

I announced earlier for everyone to exit the dbase until further notice. It is currently after hours when all those who would access the dbase is gone for the day. I tried to delete ithe icon w/ the padlock however get the message "Cannot delete. It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." I will have contact ITS in a.m. Any chance of somehow losing the actual dbase? I can't afford that.

With any luck, the database will still be OK, but if you can't open it even after IT has unlocked it, you can try the following:
    - Create a blank new database.
    - Use File | Get External Data | Import... to import as many database objects from the problem database as possible.

I am back in business. Thanks!

I am in desperate need of a database to help me track employee trainings - what trainings an employee has had; when trainings are due, etc. Can you reference me to a sample that has been shared?

Sometimes, on a network, I cannot delete an .ldb. It gives me the same error message you get. If I log off & then back on the network I can delete it.

In addition to what Hans said about copying all the items over to a fresh database, don't forget to ask click the options box and get any import/export file specifications (no longer available in 2007, I guess), relationships, menu bars, etc.
