    XP SP3 (XP SP3)

Since installing SP3 three of my computers have started crawling along very slowly after boot up. I mean for the first 5 or 10 minutes after booting up it takes forever to get any window or WEB site to come up. I'm talking minutes here maybe one or two, not seconds. Even clicking on the "Start" menu and having it show up takes 30 or more seconds at least. After that initial 5 or 10 minutes then everything seems to run normal. It is doing this on both XP Pro and XP Home machines.

Also on two on my computers it takes an hour or so to check for Microsoft updates and then even more time once they are found to download them. This is compared to my other machines that take a total of maybe 5 minutes at the most to find, download, and install the updates.

Any ideas on how to correct these problems without reverting back to SP2? By the way when SP2 was installed I had none of these problems. OH at times I may have found it a bit slow at the Microsoft update site but nothing like I am experiencing now.

Be patient, if you have a desktop search product installed it will take some time for it to index all the new OS files. XP will take some time to do its analysis also for prefetch processing. Have you used something such as AutoRuns for Windows to check what is starting when you boot? Did you make any hardware or networking changes too?

No I didn't make any hardware or network changes. All I did was install SP3. When I took it in to the computer shop to see if they could figure it out they updated the BIOS and it does run much faster now when it is working properly.

Do you believe it is normal for 2 of my machines to take over an hour to find updates when the others find them in less than 5 minutes. They are all on the same network.

I'll run that link and see what is loading. Also are you saying that this indexing will occur more often then 1 time because it has been happening about every other boot up? Thank you

Indexing happens automatically. Depending on how much you use your PC it could take quite a while for it to catch up if you allow system files to be indexed. You should also check Windows Explorer - Tools | Folder Options | View and make sure "Automatically search for network folders and printers" is NOT checked.

The speed with which WIndows updates checks is highly dependent on the hardware and available resources. An hour is excessive though.

"Automatically search for network folders and printers" is checked and I have a network printer. If I uncheck that will the printer still function properly?

    Thanks

Yes, it will still work properly. That check box forces Windows Explorer (your desktop is a special version of Explorer) to check your network every time it starts for network folders and printers. If any network PC or device is unavailable for whatever reason (i.e. powered off, not connected, etc.) Windows will take a long time to wait for it just to see if it becomes available.

My 'other half's' laptop takes AGES to start up. She has several (6) printers installed for different office's that she works from. Am I right in thinking that this should help?
