    Update ► AutoIt v3.2.12.0

AutoIt v3.2.12.0 has been released. AutoIt v3 is a <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> BASIC-like scripting language designed for automating the Windows GUI and general scripting.

See History for the extensive list of changes.

Thanks Joe. There are quite a few significant changes since the last major release.

Yeah, thanks Joe! Since you also mentioned it in my thread about an "auto-type'er" for Vista ( <post:=711,317>post 711,317</post:> ), perhaps I should try to create my own little "tsr" to do the job I'm after.

All I want is somethning to lie in the background and when I hit a key combo, type (emit) my email addy, or my name and address, or ... etc. Since AutoIt compiles nicely, maybe I can do it there. I can tell you that the others I've found and downloaded are NOT the easiest things to use and nowhere near as simple as my ol' fave QuicKeys. I do hope that Startly changes their minds and makes a Vista version of that program.

This is a tiny one that might fit the bill. No idea if it works on Vista though, or if multiline text is supported.
Special Characters Menu delivers on-demand special characters insertion within any application. You can download direct from SpecChar.zip.

    "tsr" - you are showing your age (and I mine since I recognised the "TLA") <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Using AutoIt for "boilerplate" seems a litlle demeaning given all that it's capable of, but does show off it's versatility. It works fine with any application, including Windows itself, with a negligible footprint.

    Re: Update &#9658; AutoIt v3.2.12.0

    Ooooh, that's a "gotcha"...

And, if my age and memory aren't failing me completely, Tim, I think YOU were the one several years ago who first pointed me in the direction of AutoIt. Have I got it right?

And finally, you ARE correct about what I need being a "dumb down" for AutoIt, but doggone it, I just can't (so far) find a simple little program to do this job in Vista. I'll keep after it though.

Edited much later: It was in <post:=210,502>post 210,502</post:> oh so long ago...

Did you try the one I suggested? I just tried a multiline entry (on XP) and it works fine:

    1. Press Win Key + C
    2. Click on entry shown below
    3. The following is "injected at the cursor position (start of next line):

Well I'll be dipped in "stuff!" No, I didn't try it Alan, because I've had a copy of that program around for some time and mistakenly thought it was a SINGLE character retriever, so I didn't bother. I WILL give it a look now however.

In the meantime, I found another called Macro Mania at Macro Mania® that looks like a dumbed-down similar to AutoIt. I'm giving it a trial this weekend.

It's actually rather better than its description indicates. For instance, it can insert a bold/unbold tag pair in a lounge post, with the new cursor position placed in between the opening and closing tags, all ready for typing. I'm just beginning to explore the possibilities myself.

OK, I give up! How the <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> do I RUN the @#$%^&* program? I unzipped the archive and executed the file, task manager says it's running but I don't know how to get its gui to come up. The only thing the readme says is Win-C whereupon I hear a pop (because of MY sound scheme) but NADA. Sorry, and it ain't even blue Monday round here...

Hello, how different is Autoit from AutoHotKey which is what I use? From personal experience, does one have any advantages over the other. I seem to remember reading somewhere that they are similar.

    Thanks,

    Chris (Hunt)

I manually placed a shortcut into my Startup folder. The Win-C then brings up the pop-up window shown in the screenshot. Does your "pop" indicate that you should be seeing this new window?

    Re: Update ► AutoIt v3.2.12.0

I did discover that the program doesn't "appear" unless you've got a text editor or something open to accept it. My Bad. But once it opens, then what? I've right-clicked my fanny off trying to add something to the list as you did, but I can't get anywhere.

Meanwhile, I'm trying YET ANOTHER ONE: UtilFr – Clavier+ 10.6.1 Which is pretty easy to use (Whew!) in XP but I don't know if it's Vista compatible, so I'll go now to try it.

I don't really use either. See autoit autohotkey - Google Search for threads discussing the products.

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by AlanMiller on 19-May-08 08:13. P.S. Another reason I like it is that it only takes up one hotkey combination for all your text inserts.)</P>Open the file chars.ini in a text editor and just add what you like. I simply tacked:
    |{Al Hoffman
    Moderator WMVP
    aeh_lounge@alhoffman.org}

    on the end then saved.

The | shows up as a divider on the popup and the ^ represents the cursor position after the braced {} selection is inserted.
