Micro SD Cards

I have a "hardware" problem with the 2 gig micro SD card I bought recently for my new Palm smartphone (see <post:=690,408>post 690,408</post:>). I had a problem ONCE with the card, but since that time I've been able to copy both music and pictures back and forth between it and my computer on a few occasions. Since I don't do that very much, I only recently tried to copy a couple more songs to the card, so I took it out of the phone and inserted it into my USB card reader to do the copy. I get the attached message about write protection and haven't the foggiest about WHY! The "lock" on the card is in the unlocked position and I've removed and re-inserted it several times thinking it might be a fluke, with no luck. While it's in the card reader, I've checked properties, sharing and security and can't see a thing that I need to change. (This is in XP, not Vista!)

Does anyone have a clue that might help me, please?

Re: Micro SD Cards

I guess nobody has one... So, I needed to copy some files again and continued "messing around." I don't think I had to do this when I first got the card so I don't know what happened in the meantime. But, I had to go to Properties, Sharing, share the card and add permissions of full control for everyone and that fixed the limitation.

Hi Al,

Your original note was dated May 19 and today, May 23, you replied to yourself that no one has added input. I do subscribe to the daily feed and Hardware is one of my selected forums. Your original note was never received... at least not by me. If I had received it, I would have replied that I do have micro SD (Sandisk) cards and experienced a like problem. It was fooling around with the properties, just as you found, that resolved the issue.

Anyway, glad you resolved our own issue.

Re: Micro SD Cards

Hmmmm, I guess I should've put a smilie on that post, Bob, for I didn't mean for it to sound hateful. I just figured that lack of response for a few days meant that no one had a ready suggestion. What I still don't understand is how I was able to access the card those few times so far and not had to do this sharing and permissions thing. Well, hopefully it's moot and I'll see if those permissions "hold" and I can continue to access the card in the future. It could always be possible that the Treo is "doing something" to the card while it's in the phone...

As to your failure to get digests, I don't know the answer to that one. I don't subscribe to any boards or emails on posts since I'm here so often and read ALL the forums, it would be a waste of bandwidth and drive space for me.

OK, so you have jinxed me. Since your reply above, I now only receive 2 of my 19 daily digests... 1) Hardware and 2) Other Software Applications. At least you can post another item in Hardware and I should receive it.

I have just reset all 19 Daily Archives and we'll see what tonight's mailing brings.

Cheers, Bob

I was just gonna suggest that you write to... but I've just been to Lounge Matters and see that you have. Good luck on it; we'll have to see if Claude comes up with something.

Al I have a Maxtor III on my laptop and I don't want "Guest" users to have access to it. I clicked on properties and didn't see the Permissions screen in your post. Where is it? I didn't know I could do that.
Thanks John

Re: Micro SD Cards

Hi John,

You addressed Al but were replying to my note... so, I'll answer your query.

When you selected Properties, click on the Sharing tab and then select Advanced Sharing. In the Advanced Sharing display, check Share this folder. and then select Permissions. On the Share Permissions screen, select items as desired and back out by clicking the Apply button.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Bob

Sorry it has taken this long to get to you Bob. Here is all I see when I click on properties etc. I show no Advanced tab?

Re: Micro SD Cards

John, I'm wondering if Maxtor has "done something" to the way Windows handles that hardware, because I can't find a window on my system that looks quite like what you're seeing. Keep in mind that MY question originated due to a micro SD card in a USB attached multi-card reader. But, I've looked at the Properties screens in both XP and Vista for my internal SATA, external USB, CD/DVD and card reader and ALL of the properties screens follow a flow similar to that shown by Bob. I don't know what to tell you to try next...

Re: Micro SD Cards

I think you might need to clear the "Use simple file sharing" option in [Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options... > View] to make the advanced dialog appear.

Re: Micro SD Cards

Well, I read Microsoft's article on turning on or off Simple File sharing, and it is simply not there. Me thinks that something is more amiss. I have been debating reformating because of some other issues and I think it is time that I do that.
Thanks John

You are not alone. ALL of our XP machines do NOT have the Advance button and we are running XP Home.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
