How'd this happen? (2003)

I've been working with a particular document for days with no problem. I'm using outline numbering that I based on the List Number style family. I also use line numbers. Today there suddenly appeared some really strange text in the extreme left margin. I widened the left margin to see all that's there, and...well, see for yourself in the attachment.

I've gone to Styles and Formatting and looked at the "Line Number" style, but there's no hint of the problem there. The Chapter 1 text goes away if I remove line numbering, but it comes right back when I restore line numbering. This text appears on every line of the almost 4,000 lines in the document. Any ideas?

That's weird. Style names can be displayed in Normal view if you set the width of the Style Area in the View tab of Tools | Options..., but not in Print Layout view (and line numbers are not displayed in Normal view).

Does the problem persist if you quit and restart Word? Or restart your PC?

Weird is right! To answer your question: A few moments ago, I was shutting down for the day and had closed all my apps. Before I turned off my computer, I decided to re-open Word and the document in question. Whaddayaknow: Everything's back to normal! Go figure....

So it was probably just a temporary glitch...
